Subject: SPIT AND SPUTTERED AND WENT DEAD IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1996 Dakota Sport with a 2.5L engine, and 144100 miles on it. This has been an outstanding P/U. I was driving to work and it spit and sputtered, with no power and sounded like it was going dead, I shifted to a lower gear (standard tanny)and tried to keep it running, no luck. I pulled it to a mechanic friend of mine and he told me I needed a coil. I got a new coil and she fired right up. I drove it about 6 or 7 miles and put it up. I started back to work the next day and she went dead again. she is getting fuel and firing but not starting, any ideas what could be wrong?

Message: Hmmm to start an engine you need fuel, spark, and compression.
Is she worn out?
Do you have any trouble codes? If the engine light is on, they are very easy to check.

Message: OBD II is the type system that the 96 and newer vehicles have.
turn your key on then off then on then off and back on. then count the number of times the check engine flashes when it pauses and then how many it flashes again. it may do this a couple of times.
turn the key on and off then on and off then on again to confirm that you copyed the flashes and when it paused between flashes right.
then come back on here and post the results.
Ill let ya know what the code is and what the code says the problem is.

Message: had this problem recently on my 97.... it was after putting on a new water pump which really baffled us.
Turns out it needed a new ignition coil.
Check for a nice bright blue spark coming off the coil to the cap...then check for a sprak to out the plug wires. No codes came up ever.
