Subject: Which speakers to replace Infinities?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 CC with an Infinity system. The woofers in both the doors are shot. I am not a huge audiophile in my truck so I don't plan on spending a lot of money replacing them. I am hoping to pick some up from a place like Best Buy. Checked the OEM replacements and they are $150/each so I am not wanting to do that. Couple of questions:

1. Any suggestions on what I should go with?

2. Do I need to consider replacing the tweeters located next to the door latches? Also, since these tweeters exist, does this mean there are not tweeters in the woofers located in the bottom of the door (I was going to pull the panel off to see for myself) and how does this affect what I will replace the bottom speakers with?

3. How good are these speakers, really? Am I going to be disspointed with anything less? I've been very happy with them over the past 6 years.

I really appreciate any help.

The stock speakers are built cheap, that's why a lot of people blow them. Though they do sound pretty darn good for an OEM speaker. The problem your going to face is the stock speakers are 2 ohm and almost all aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm (1/2 as efficient,,, loud) Don't expect a 4 ohm speaker to sound as loud as the stockers.

You don't have to replace the tweeters in the sail panels and your stock speakers don't have tweeters on them. It's not going to hurt anything installing Coaxial's or 3-way's with tweeters, but the tweeters in the new speakers won't do anything.

You can get away with installing 4 ohm speakers, but if I were replacing them I would look for 2 ohm speakers, they will sound the best. Also your truck has 6 3/4" speakers (THANKS DODGE) so you will either need to get 6 3/4" replacements or make sure you get adapter rings for 6 1/2" to 6 3/4", some speakers come with the adapter rings. I think someone posted that Infinity has aftermarket 2 ohm 6 3/4" speakers, might be worth looking into since thier aftermarket speakers are better than thier OEM stuff.

so i was poking around in the best buy tonight and guy there tells me aftermarket speakers won't work with the infinity system because it is a proprietary thing. he says if i don't get the oem speakers i have to get a new deck and bypass the infinity amplifier.

is he crappin' me or what? it was getting a little smelly around that section of the store there if you know what i mean, but i don't know.

DSW just explained that same thing. It would be to your benefit to get 2 ohm speakers, they will sound better. It will work with 4 ohm speakers but will not sound as good and may not last as long. You can push a 2 ohm sub with a 4 ohm amp but you run into the same problems.
