Ive heard some crappy sounding chevy 350's lately, sound like they where gonna crap right then and there. Of coarse its not going to sound all bitter sweet with that many miles but I have never heard a 318 sound quite like that. Theres a difference between them sounding like they are on there last leg and them sounding like theyve been driven hard but still have alot of life left. And a 318 is either running like a raped ape or not running at all.

The 318's performance came between the GM 305 and 350, it never seemed to have the oil-burning and smoke-producing qualities of those engines. Like the slant six, the 318 has shown itself capable of great abuse at the hands of those non-oil-or-air-filter-changing folk who so often end up behind the wheels of Mopar cars and light trucks.

Go to a junkyard, more then likely u will not find a 318 sitting around. They are normally pulled out and thrown in a derby car for more 30 min of hell then any other motor has seen in half its lifetime.

I have a friend who had a chrysler slant six. The car was taken on a 500 mile trip right after getting serviced... except the service place forgot to put coolant in it.

The car was driven over 500 miles without coolant. WOW

I hear those blocks are almost bullet proof because they were designed to be cast out of aluminum but instead of aluminum, they were poured with steel. Super thick

Craig, I would agree 100%. I have driven the '04 and newer Triton and it did feel gutless. In fact, magazine testing confirms that it is the slowest half-ton. Very solid truck though.

My '03 definitely feels more powerful, even though it has 40 less hp. So far, it has been good to me. I do miss the Dakota sometimes, in spite of the problems I had.
