Message: Basically the term " posi " is thrown around loosely to refer to any rear differential that has some form of traction control keeping it from being fully "open".
Some consider a limited slip differential,LSD, to be a "posi".
A true "positive" rear end forces the rear wheels to turn together at all times, locked together, and thus the term "locker".
Lockers are a stronger system that uses gear teeth meshing together and is optimally for hard core street/drag racers and off-roaders.
Toyota and others are now offering electronically actuated lockers in some truck packages.Open diff. when switched off, and locked when switched on.
A LSD , offered by most manufacturers, uses a clutch pack to accomplish the same task but only after some wheel spin has been created to bring the clutch discs together.(and like all clutches ,they wear out with excessive use).
So , to answer your question, the Dakota does not have a "posi" but it can be had with a LSD.
If your's does not then it's an open diff.
Does one rear wheel spin and the other do nothing if you floor it on ice or wet roads?
You can get an aftermarket locker installed ,or install it yourself if you're so inclined, but you'll have to research the 6-8 different kinds and 10-12 different companies that make them.
I went to POWERTRAX to get mine. ARB is another good brand.
Check out the off-road board on this site for more info.

It's an option on both the dakota and the ram. Always has been. Unless it's ordered as a specific line item, you don't get it. I don't recall it being part of a standard order package.

Message: check the inside glove box lid for your gear ratio and it should also state if it is LSD or not. on an SXT i highly doubt it has LSD. and is porbably either 3.21:1 or 3.55:1 ratio.

Message: Posi is not the same as a locker - it's just general motors name for LSD.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Being an SXT, yours should be pretty new and the axle tag still on it...
My '02 has a tag on the axle stating the gear ratio (3.55) and Trac-Loc (LSD, Posi etc etc).
If you don't have a tag still, check your factory window sticker.
'02 4.7 HO, ArmorThane spray-in...FUN and MINE!
