The people you talk to and say the 350's are junk are morons. Every half way educated mechanic know's the 350's are very dependable and makes power cheap. That's the number one reason you see them used in more application than any other motor. If your all for dodge I understand but you can't say a motor that's been around since 67 without any major changes is a bad motor. If you think other wise you just lying to your self. A Chevy 350 is to a Chevy guy as a 318 is to a dodge guy they are both very strong and reliable motors. Just be glad it's a American motors used in hot rods rather than a jap motor. By the way my work van has 275k 5.7 never been rebuilt don't burn or leak oil or blow smoke.

Holy crap.. some of you folks are *idiots*.

First of all, Dodge does not OWN the hemi design. Christ almighty, the first hemi was for a mother loving jag. Second of all, ford and chevy both used hemi head's for quiet some time in there cars.

But in the end, the truth came out:

The hemi is the pinnacle of an old design. The 2 valve-per-cylinder head's don't get better then hemi's. Sadly though, there are better options. 4-valve-per-cylinder for example, which cannot be done properly with a hemi head. (Take a bowl, and try and find a way to get decent valve's to not hit eachother.) The chevrolet 350 is used in all the hotrod's because of what's been said already:

1. Cheap
2. Dependable
3. Can make giant power
4. Every vehicle on earth has had a 350 in it, at one time. So someone else out there has done the swap, and you might be able to find em.

I understand this is a dodge forum, and I love dodge, but the hemi is not the "godliest" of the engines. If anything, the dodge cummins is the "godliest" of all engines.

Oh by the way, its a chevrolet smallblock, most engine's aren't actually 350ci, a lot are 305's, 383 and such.

Those things are amazing.

So in the end:

Hemi - Jag.(By 3 years)
Best engine ever made? Cummins
Best gas engine? Chevrolet SMALLBLOCK

WHY? Most dependable and longest lasting gas motor out there. It dont have oil burning, smoke producing qualities of many other engines among high mileage. Same reason the 318 is the most sought after and used in derbyies. They just love heat and handle it well. Reliability doesnt get any better.

depandability is not the only factor here. Price vs dependability
vs power. Pound for Pound, Dollar for Dollar I could build a
faster car from a 350. They are great friggin motors just
depends on the application.
