Subject: Worst noise I ever heard!!!

Message:
Ok so I spent last night doing some highway driving and all was well till i stopped for a coke. When i got my Dak back on the highway I heard the loudest "vibration" sound ever coming from the ?rear?. I stopped and checked under the truck and saw no problems. Got back on the highway and heard it again. Then i noticed that the truck did not make this noise while traveling 55 MPH and at 1500 RPM. I started to work the gas pedal to find that if i released the gas and tapped it the noise occured. It also will do it if i get the RPMs near 2000. My thinking is fuel pump... I noticed i was getting only about 14 miles to the gallon (worse then normal).

I spent some time reading on here and i noticed some people having an issue when they hit bumps on the highway. My dak seems to surge if i hit a pot hole or mound. Possible torque converter?

I'm going to the dealer in the morning to hopefully find out what it is, But i would definitly like some insight from everyone.

Specs listed below:

2001 CC 4X4 5.9 with 42000 miles

Thanks: Jake

Since I can't hear the noise you are describing, please don't take anything said here as the word of God. My personal feeling is that if this vibration occurs at a specific speed, and seems to do this particularly when you tap the gas, is that you're looking at a U joint in the drive shaft. I could be way off base with that though. 42,000 miles seems a little soon for that to happen.

There are other possibilities of course.

This might be a dumb question, but are the rear tires cut up badly? If so, this can cause vibration at some speeds, but the vibration will largely disappear at highway speed. However, there would be a lot of noise on the highway...

I'm not sure entirely about your surging when you hit a pothole. Some of that is going to naturally occur when the cruise control is not set, as your foot will undoubtatly move up and down on the accelerator. However, this is not necesarily the case. I do not believe it to be a torque converter just from your description.

Surging COULD be due to an O2 sensor failing. That would explain the drop in fuel econemy, and the surging anyway. This is assuming that there is a surging problem of course. And the 5.9 is not known to get particularly wonderful fuel econemy to begin with. 14 does seem a little on the low side, but if you're working it hard around locally, I wouldn't be too surprised...

As I said, I can't hear your vibration, so I can't tell you what it is. I doubt the fuel pump, but I suppose it is possible. I've never heard one get to the point where you could hear it growling that bad that it vibrates in the truck though... Usually a dying fuel pump sounds like a lawnmower- like a howling noise, not so much a hard vibration.

But it's difficult to say. Good luck with your truck, whatever it is, I hope it's not expensive.

:-)
