Message: I'm not sure, but just from what I remember reading, Gen I is before 93, Gen II is 94-97 and Gen III is 98 - present. I'm sure it's wrong somewhere, but it's all about the year and the different body styles... Someone will tell you what it is, actually... I don't even know why I posted this being that it has a 99% chance of being wrong.

Message: Dave is %100 right. Gen I, II, and III is the diffrent dakota chasies and bodystyles through out the year. GEN III is what is being sold at the dealers right now and pre 1998 it was the more boxy looking GEN II. Sone there will be a IIII and hopfully its better then III.

Message: Actually Dave I don't think you're that far off. After asking a few friends and from what I think I remember here's our concensus.
Gen I: 91 and prior non-Magnum engine with the old body style.
Gen II: 92-96 Magnum engine with the old body style.
Gen III: 96 and up Magnum engine with the new body style.
We're not positive but we think this is correct. Can't really help a whole lot with the performance mods as we all have the other 3 engines. I do know that K&N makes a drop in filter for the 2.5 for about $45. It will flow a lot better than the stock one. You could also have an exhaust shop do a custom exhaust. My 3" 40 series Flowmaster custom system was about $225 out the door. Just do a little research and make sure the shop does good work. Hope this helps a little. Jim.

Message: The Gen I,II,III thing would apply to the bodystly not weather or not it has a magnum motor. 91 was the first year of the Gen II's but the 318 was not a magnum motor until 92. Somewhere else down the line the other motors got their magnum status. Your 96 is the last year of the Gen II's as 97 was when the cange to the current body style happened. 96 was also the year the 4 cylinder got more powerful so at least you got that going for you. On another note does the "Griz" name have anything to do with the ever powerful University of Montana Grizzlys?

Message: Ok, I know this one. A gen I dakota refers to the first Dakota trucks, but did not have magnum engines. The Gen II Dakotas are the old bodystyle, but have magnum motors. A gen III Dakota refers to the current bodystyle that came out in 97.

Message: I thought you could tell by looking at the grilles. Gen I has the recessed, boxy grille(like mine)1987-1990. Gen II has the lights flush with the curving front end, 1991-1996, and of course, Gen III with the uneven light/hood set up. 1997-pres. But I am no expert!
