Subject: '98 trailer wiring fuse?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, All:

My trailer suffered a short-to-ground of the tail light wire, resulting in darkness. After fixing the trailer, I was not surprised to find that I had no power to that curcuit, and I went looking for the fuse. I found a blown fuse, but after replacing it I still had no power to the tail light circuit. Does this ring a bell for anybody?

The blown fuse was marked "O/H consoll", but there is no overhead anything in my truck, so it seems locical that this circuit was used for an add-on trailer circuit. The trailer outlet harness looks factory, but there is no mention of it on the glove box sticker, so I'm guessing dealer install.

Could there be a second fuse? What should I look for?

Appreciate any help.

Elliot

Do your rear lights still work ? I'll assume so for now since you didn't say they don't; that leaves the trailer wiring, likely aftermarket to trace. These harnesses often clip in near the tail lights, and can include a module to balance the extra power demands of the trailer wiring. That could be fried. I don't think its necessarily logical to suspect the overhead console fuse; wiring adapter manufacturer is not likely to suggest one way to hook up their product if you don't have the OH, and another if you do.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Update!

I had checked the fuses in the cab only -- on the edge of the dash -- didn't know there were more fuses under the hood. Learned about the "Power Distribution Center" in another thread on this board. Sure enough, in the big fuse box behind the battery was a 40 amp fuse called "trailer". Blown. Possibly, the "console" fuse has nothing to do with my trailer light problem. I can use my trailer again! Merry Christmas to all, and special thanks to everyone involved with this board!
