Subject: ELECTRIC FAN QUEST 4.7L IP: Logged
Message: I have a '00 QC w/ 4.7L. The little electric fan in front has stopped running. Is this a problem? I havent overheated yet in the FL weather just using the clutch fan and it is going to start cooling off soon. Is this something that can be put off? I suppose I am sacrificing some MPG's by not making the repair, huh? I called and they wanted around $400 to fix at dealership...sounds like a lot to me. Any suggestions? Is it easy to replace fan myself? Thanks.

Message: Do a little trouble shooting first NP. The problem
may not be the fan motor at all. First, turn ON
your air, set to cold. Make sure the compressor
*clicked* on. At that time the fan in front of
the radiator should also be running. If not, check
for a blown fuse (in the box under the hood). If
that is ok, find the relay (in the same box).
Swap it out with another relay in that box. If
fan begins to run, buy a new relay. It has been
a minor problem for the contacts to burn up.
If neither of the above gets to your problem,
unplug the fan and run wires from the battery
direct to the fan without the engine running. Get
some help from a friend if you need it.
If all the trouble shooting leads you to a bad fan
motor (and I kinda doubt it will) you *can* wait
untill next spring to replace it IF you leave the
air OFF while driving around town. Highway speeds
will be ok... Just keep a eye on the temp gauge.
Good luck...
