Message: buid a nice little engine stand from wood on a wood pallet, then band it down and shrink wrap it. Then find a trucking company with a dock locally with decent freight rates that has a dock close to where you are shipping to. Be sure to class the engine as 'Class 50 Used automotive parts' for the best freight rate. I sent an engine and transmission from San Antonio, TX to Jacksonville , FL for $180 via truck freight a couple months ago.

Message: Forwardair works great if you are close to one of their docks. CA to TX was $225 for a complete engine and all accessories strapped to a pallet. For mine it just had a wooden block or two screwed into the pallet that the front of the oil pan rested on. The engine was strapped down with four steel straps, wrapped in a tarp which was taped down after a fashion.
