Subject: Tranny ? IP: Logged
Message: I picked up a 3.9l dakota auto with the 42RE tranny and when I got it the dealer had just changed the filter and flushed it. well I checked the fluid, and its over filled a little and there seems to be air bubbles in the fluid(atleast they were on the dipstick everytime I checked it.
was it the overfill that is causing this froth or what? none of my other trannys have ever had this happen(course I service them myself)im wondering what kind of damage could this have done/if any?
the tranny was shiftin hard thats what prompted me to check.
its gettin flushed and filter/gasket changed this weekend but im wondering about damage it could have done.
also, how well do these trannys hold up? any expirence with the 42 RE?

Message: How badly overfilled was this? Very slightly overfilled would not cause the transmission to shift hard, but if it was a quarter inch overfilled on the stick... that could be a problem. Probalby not a permenant damage kind of deal- I'd still go easy on it if you must drive it though.
As for the 42RE, it's not a bad transmission, not a great one either. Under hard use, they won't hold up, but if you wanted to use it that hard, you should have bought a bigger truck. Figure 100-150k miles per transmission, depending on use. It's not like a Grand Caravan either though.

Message: it is a little under a quarter inch overfilled. I have to use it and put around 200 more miles on it before I can change it. it doesnt do it all the time(the shifting hard) seems like only when it heats up.
lets say down the road, the miles add up and its time for a new tranny. what other models of trannys will bolt up? I tried looking and found a couple of rebuilt 42 re's for 850.00 but was wondering what others will bolt up.
thank you for your help.

Message: Over-filling can cause the bubbles you mentioned.
Step up to the 46RE. It's the bigger version, has much more available in the form of HP aftermarket parts, and prices are very close in the reman. market. You will also need the 46RE torque converter. It'll bolt right in (only 1/4 inch difference in length so the same driveshaft will work), and all the electronic controls and wiring are the same.
