Subject: Swapping to 4.10s IP: Logged
Message: Ive been calling around town to get these installed but the lowest quote I have gotten is $380. That seems pretty pricey to me. I may attempt this install myself. I doesnt seem too hard with the right tools. (I love free rental tools) My question is how much time should I put aside for this project. I have air tools and a impact gun to speed the process.
Also if anybody has seen 9.25 instructions on the net anywhere let me know. I have read about many other types of rearend installs.

Message: I had 4.10 installed in my truck. Changing rear end gears isnt as easy as you might think. I consider myself fairly handy with tools but opted to have a master mechanic friend do it for me on a weekend at his shop while I helped. Sure am glad I did! I also had him install a bearing and seal kit for the axles (not a bad idea since they are apart).

If you BREAK Something. It was a lesson learned on how NOT to do something so you do it BETTER the next time.
I plan on doing mine. Also have air tools and quite handy. Have swapped out USED gears. I think that was HARDER finding the right shims and all than buying a new set with a install kit.
Let me look for the excellent set of instructions I downloaded once....
Ok. I found them. Then searched and found them on Randy's ring and pinion web. Very good instructions...

You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open pdf files.
Most of you should have it. If not, download it. It is free.

Message: Your right about the wont ever learn part. That is why I learned from a master mechanic first. If I were to screw up something from ignorance it wouldnt be a lesson learned as I still wouldnt know how to do it right. Not to mention a bite in my wallet. I am confident I could do it now and am considering replacing my 4.10 to 4.56.
Note that on a 3.55 to 4.10 swap there is a Pin that you must install that is sometimes sold seperately.

Message: 318SD, Tell us more about the pin that's needed while going from 3.55's to 4.10's, is this a dowel pin or something in the carrier?

Message: You talking about the pin that holds the two axle shafts from moving inward?
That's the only pin I know of in a rear axle.
I would NOT like it if I found out half way through the job, that i needed something else!

Message: I bought a set of Richmond 4.10's from summit racing. (Summitracing.com). Part no. RMG-6903141.
Under the notes it states you need to use a cross pin not included with the ring and pinion set. Part no. RMG-80-0278-1. You can not use the original.

Message: The ring gear for 4.10 is smaller than the 3.55. Also the pin must slide from side to side during the install of the 4.10. The original will not work for this.

Message: The instruction sheet from my Richmond gear set say's that the cross pin can be ground to fit.
This is for the 9 1/4 rear with 4.10 or steeper gears.
The ring gear on 4.10's are thicker and the stock cross pin will not slide past it.
You'd have to contact Richmond to get the spec's to grind your pin if they did'nt come with the gears.
Good luck, I had to tear mine back down to readjust pinion depth. Was howling like a pack of wild dogs!
