Seems like an alright vehicle, just looking at the ad. The V6 is a little doggish in the 4x4 but what kind of tool buys a 4x4 pick-up to drag race?

I say, if you like the looks of it, buy it. Personally, I think the redal covers and the steering wheel cover looka little gay but those can come off easily.

I have a 97 without the 4x4 and get about 17 mpg on average. Just make sure it hasn't been abused. If you hear some rattling in the engine bay, the timing chain could be loose, and could cost you $500 at a shop. The truck has a lot of extras that would cost you a pretty penny to do all of them yourself. The 3.9L is not fast. If I was looking again, I would probably hold out for a V8. Pretty close to the same mileage, with a lot more power. That truck definately looks nice though.

If you can get it for the right price, the answer is a careful maybe. Personally, I feel that lifting a truck can put a lot of excess strain on the suspension components, but it's a mild 3" lift, so maybe it won't be too bad. It looks physically in OK shape, so no body damage to tend to. The mud tires would also turn me off, as they're not going to be very civilized on the highway, and they wear like crazy (usually).

The 3.9 and an auto is not going to be very fast. The dakota is a heavy truck, and the magnum 3.9 makes about 175 hp. With a few minor mods, the 3.9 can gain some power, but if you want to go really fast, the V8 is a better option.

The truck has 90,000 miles on it: make sure you can actually see the truck and go over it CAREFULLY before you decide to buy. The Dakotas can go a long way, especially the 3.9, but like any truck can be troublesome as they get older... especially if they're not cared for.

Fuel mileage and power will vary depending on the axle ratio in it. The 3.55 will probably be a dog. The 3.92 ratio makes things a little better. If you want to go faster, you can drop to a 4.10, or a 4.56 (or something in that range- I'm not sure what exactly is offered for the axle in the truck, which is a Dana on my '04). Remember though that lower axles afford you better performance (to a point of course), but decreased fuel mileage. Fuel mileage can be as low as around 16 for heavy local use, and as high as 24 for highway use.

In my opinion, you should only CONSIDER the truck if you can look at it, or have it looked at by a mechanic you trust. 90,000 miles on a 9 year old truck (in model years) can be dangerous. Especially given the tendency of the 3.9's to chew through timing chains around that time...

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

Both of them trucks look pretty clean to me. Luke's has the package with thr Fog lights which is nice. You may want to compare prices, etc.

If you want a LIFTED truck, but don't care about power, that ebay one doesn't looked hacked up from what i can see.

Oh yeah. -Just Me- said "...The V6 is a little doggish in the 4x4 but what kind of tool buys a 4x4 pick-up to drag race? "

Hey. I held out for the V8 myself. And yes, I've taken my truck to the drag races to see how well it does. You get curious. Especially after your 5,000 Lb 4X4 holds it's own to many other trucks and sh*t boxes on the road :)

Pete. We all know you are LYING about even OWNING a Dakota!

I DON'T drive mine everyday. I have a company vehicle with it's company gas card to drive daily :)

Yet I have 33K miles on a 2 yr old Dakota truck.

That's because I LIKE to drive it, when I get to drive it!
