Subject: Different Differentials ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 93 Dakota 4x4 and within a year i am on my 3rd transfer case. When i bought the truck it was missing the front diff so i went to the dealership and got the trucks info and found out that i needed to get a 3.55 front diff so i went to the wreckers and thats what they said they gave me but now i am starting to wonder especially since i haven't done anything overly mean to the truck i use my 4x4 but not to the extreme. I had another dakota and never had a problem with one. So i was hoping that someone knows the easiest way to check what axle ratio my differentials are?? Thanks

Sæll!
The most accurate way would be to remove the differential covers and count the teeh both on the cam and pinion and divide the cam number by the pinion number and compare the numbers between the differentials. Easier way is to tape a thread on the driveshaft and lift front tire and turn it one complete revolution and count how many turns the drive shaft has gone, then repeat the procedure in the back and if the number of thread windings isn´t the same front and back, you are in trouble. But remember though, if the other tire, on the same axle, is stationery on the ground you must tivide the driveshaft revolutions by two to get dhe differentials ratio. And good luck

I would first jack up one side of truck > Front and rear tire at same time > Put truck in 4 wheel drive and nutral > Chock front and rear tire on top > Then spin one slowly > Both will spin together > Each time your chock mark comes up look at the other tire to see where that mark is > Do maybe 3 or 4 revelutions and if the chalk marks are off you got gear problems > If not you saved the time of tearing it apart
