DESPERATE! 2000 DD-Quad Cab 4x4 w/ 5.9. Truck bucks / surges while under load. ie., going up hill. Acts like it can't figure out
what gear to go into.. or ? Have taken it to 4 shops, 1st was a Dodge dealer, wrong! wanted to replace my trany for $3k.
So, I took it to a trany shop for a 2nd opinion, they ran diags and said it wasn't the trany, something in the engine. Then took it to
two different shops, both said engine diags show nothing and don't know what could be causing it.

It's been doing this for about 4 months now and getting worse.!!

Motor also pings unless I run super.

Update / forgot to talk about my milage. was getting 14/15mpg, mix driving / trucks now at 9mpg. Had a full tune-up done, injectors cleaned and the mpg went up to 11mpg. That was about a month ago, and it's now back down to 9....argh... help!

your fuel pump sounds like it might be ready to go out.

how much pressure do you have on the rails?

if you dont mind paying the extra for the gas, leave that be. a lot of daks are like that. the way they fix that is with a pcm flash that retards the timing and a couple of other things. ide leave it be.

not sure what the psi is, will check over the weekend. Spec should be what? 38-45 or so? I'll pinch off the return line (if it has a pinchable one) to see if it jumps then dies...

Luke,
Does it surge only under load? Mine was surging when cruising on the freeway. Replaced the TPS sensor $40 @ NAPA.

Also, could be the O2 sensor - I just read in another post a bad 02 would affect MPG and driveability....the 02 'should' throw a code; the TPS won't, from what I've read.

Lastly, there was the "death flash" which was an "authorized update" from the dealer (read: they do it w/out asking)for this engine's PCM. It may fix your issue, but your truck will lose some power - it was supposed to fix the pinging. If you have a sticker on the PCM that says "authorized update" it's already been done.

Good luck, Todd

Agreed, the surging may actually be the torque converter locking/unlocking/locking/etc. That was what mine was doing. Took it to the dealer and told him to replace the TPS and he said the readings on it were fine. Bought a new one from Advance Auto for $26.00 and the problem went away. When I took off the old one, I could see that it had little cracks ETC.

Checked the psi on the fuel line / 45-49psi running, though the truck sat for two days and the pressure didn't come up when I turned the key to run position. took a few cranks to start, shut'er down and then turned the key to run and the pressure came back up to the running psi. strange. intermittent problem? /
TPC ? - the trany dude said that's what he thought it was, but both the dealer and other shop i took it to said TPC was fine....

I can vouch for the TPS fix wtdash mentioned. Did the trick on my 2000 5.9 4x4 QC
