Noticed this asm that my heater fan only works on high. None of the other 3 settings work. The truck now has 38k miles on it so it is not under warranty.

I haven't looked at anyhting yet, anyone have this happen to them? What worked for you?

Blower motor resistor located on bottom of heater housing (1 connector, 2 screws). It's only available at a dealer I think for about $10. It's easier to take the screws out first and remove it from the housing before attempting to unplug the connector. It has a plastic lock in the latch and is a real pain to remove when you can't see it.

Sounds easy enough. My experience is that usually only one setting fails when the resistor pack goes though... Is this common? I have been out of the Dakota performace world for about 2 years now...

Thanks,
Chris

When mine went bad ('04 @ 28,000 miles) it had only high for a couple days then every speed except high. I had it replaced under warranty, but if it were available from a local auto parts store I would've just done it myself to avoid that hassle.

Is the heater housing located inside of the truck on the passenger side?

clavos, sorry wrong Chris Lambert... We used to get that a lot when I was still an active Dakota member...

So is the resistor pack under the dash or in the engine compartment, anyone have a pic of what it looks like and/or how to test it?

Thanks,
Chris

This resistor problem is also very prevalent on the Durango’s. Hmmmmmmm, wonder if there’s a TSB on this critter.

How can you be "out of warranty" at 38,000 miles for a blower motor failure?
I, maybe incorrectly, thought A/C and Hi-Vac stuff was covered under the 7/70 portion.

To my knowlege the 3/36 is the bumper to bumper then the 7/70 is powertrain, then there is also an 8/80 (I think) that is for emissions stuff (cats, evap canister, etc)... so this would only be under the 3/36 as far as I can tell...

My wife has a Durango with an extended "plus warranty and was told that this resistor was not covered. They charged her 2 hours labor to replace a 17.00 part. Fricken stealership! I blew a gasket when I found this out.

Sounds like somebody made easy money. Í changed the resistor board in my dakota´s blower in 7 minutes including the time it took to find the screwdriver. So; if you need it done again I won´t charge more than 1,5 hours. A real bargain nicht wahr.

I bought a Hayne's mnual, and from that book, I changed it out myself. '03 @ 78k, Took about 10 minutes. I paid about $11(?) for the part. Thing that suprised me, is that I had no idea those things were that big. I've never done anything to a vehicle other than jump start one and change a flat or two. Since then, I've replaced my brake pads myself and a couple other things. It's good for women to know how to do a few things.

OK,passenger side under the dash on the blower motor housing. Is it the white plastic disk that quarter turns to remove? Or is it the plastic connection that is a little further under the dash that has two screws to remove?

Although it does appear to mount with the two screws...

it has the two screws holding in Rene. Best thing to do is slide the red button over and pull the plug out first. It makes taking the screws out much easier. I think it is a 10mm socket you need to take them out. Might be an 8mm, I can't remember. Did mine about two months ago.

Yep, it is an 8mm, takes jsut a couple of minutes... I used a nutdriver...

I know why my first one failed... "made in Mexico"... much less beefy than the replacement the dealer sent as well.

I disconnected and reconnected the harness while the resistor pack was unattached...
