Subject: Sitting it out...Rita IP: Logged
Message: I live South of Houston, NOT in a flood, or evacuation zone. Some scraps of wood on the windows, all the preps, etc.
My beloved, QC dak, safely in the garage.
Winds kicking up, power may go out soon.
We're ready!

Message: sit tight, hurricanes suck, went through 3 last year, 2 minor ones this year (minor for Florida, that is). Katrina was a monster for the big easy, Rita is more like "fatal attraction" - dangerous, but you'll be OK in the end if you play your cards right.

Message: I wish you all the best of luck. My family's thought's and Prayers are with all of you. I was actually supposed to be coming down to the LA area this coming week with my fire dept. from up here in Norhtern West Virginia, but with Rita blowing in (this is not to my approval mind you) Our office of emergency services president decided that it would be too risky to send us down at this time.. again, this in my opinion is not a good excuse because we are trained to help people in desperate times and in dangerous situations... but I am only one person.. Again, I wish you all the best of luck and God Speed

Message: good luck. i'm in mobile, al. i've never left for any hurricane, at least not the area, i stayed at a family members house. i had to leave my dakota at home for katrina though. we're 12' above sea level and she was parked in the carport (i live on a waterfront, btw). water got 2" from entering the house, so the truck was about 2' in water. she runs fine though, no water damage or corrosion from the salt water that i can tell. but i know how it feels when you want to stay. i would rather stay at home and not be offered emergency help than to leave, but i left for my family's sake. i just like to know what's happening at my house so i can have what little control mother nature offers me over it. anyway, good luck and be well.

Message: And As you now know, Rita was nothing more than a
mediocore wind storm for us. For me, just south of Houston, very litte rain-damn, I was looking forward to a greener lawn.
I am sooooo glad I decided to stay put. Many friends in the area, spent from 6-18 hrs 'parked' on the freeways, only to come back home, before it hit!! I couldn't see putting my wife, my two sons, 2&4 yr old, through an ordeal like that!!
EMT, I'm also a firefighter here in pearland, all volunteers, high tech dept though.

Message: Our dept consists of all vol. as well, we are semi-high tech. We have 5 trucks, with 3 being 2yrs old. The other two are our tanker (which is an '88 mack 2250gal tandem axle) and the other is a '96 freightliner squad truck (numbered #51, which is actually how I came up with my nickname, not from the show as most people think). Glad to hear that you and your family are safe!

Message: todd, i'm glad you and your family are ok. we finally got power back since it went out on friday at about 5:30pm. not much rain here lots of wind steady 60-70mph for about 6 hrs. i faired a lot better than one guy i work with,
he lives about 20 inland and the storm surge sent about 3ft of water in his house. and he lives about 80 miles from where the eye made landfall.
the one thing i can't believe is the dumb@sses that stayed even after seeing what happened
to those stupid #@@!$$% in N.O.

Message: Holy Sh*t, that's awesome. In our county, we have 6 Vol. stations that are seperate from each other. No substations or anything, and we provide 90% or our funding for all of our equipment, with 10% coming from state/federal funding. Out of the 6 dept's, my dept. covers the most area, which is approx. 33 sq miles, pop. of 4800, and 1 high school, 1 middle school, and 1 elementary school, all seperate buildings.... not quite as large as what your's is by far :o)

Message: You guys were lucky. I just got back to Tenn. from drying out my mothers house and replaceing all the appliances in Ocean Springs, Mississppi. Her cottage that she had just moved to on the beach is just gone with all her stuff. Her land lords almost 200 year old house is gone too. Probably about a 30 foot storm surge took them both. Ocean Springs is directly accross the bay from the Biloxi casino's you've seen on the news. Her landlord and wife were home when it went. They spent 2 1/2 hours in a tree after escaping off the roof in 150 MPH winds after the roof blew off and the house desentigrated under them. If that wastn't proof of angelic help theirs no other reason they'd be alive. Mom left the day before.

Message: Wow,
That sounds pretty scary!
Nothing like that here after all when it made landfall, But two days before, they thought it was coming here. I'm sure you saw the mayhem on the Houston freeways.
Over 30 deaths-heat stroke, etc, but none from the actual storm.
