Subject: rear axle swap in progress...have a ?
IP: Logged

Message:
i have an 87 dakota 3.9L and the rear axle failed the other day (108k). today i went to several salvage yards and could only find a 6-lug rear end (round cover) to replace my 5-lug (octagonal cover). the install was going well until i went to bolt up the drive shaft. the u-joint is too narrow for the yoke(?) does anyone know if there is a replacement u-joint to fit or am i going to need to get a different drive shaft? if i need the drive shaft, is it the same length and spline as my 87. btw, this is a farm truck so i am not worried about the mismatched lug pattern and the need for 2 spares. it rarely sees paved streets. i got the 6-lug axle (yearunknown)and two 6-lug wheels from a 2002 dakota for 250 dollars. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance, jb
