Hi guys, I had never noticed this before, But I just wanted to ask. I was in stop n go traffic today and noticed that My Oil Pres guage was swinging left to right, left to right. dead center (normal) is 40 so it would swing to the right of 40 higher pressure whenever I accelerated and would dip below 40 whenever I stopped, It remained in in the normal area through the whole time. Car was well warmed up and it keped happening for about 10 min till I got through traffic. Any Ideas. Thanks guys!!

well when you accellerate you create more pressure and when yo ustop the pressure goes back down. so I think its normal. my 03 does that some. but you could look in to the oil pressure sending unit maybe faulty.

Also, how old is the oil? The older the oil get's, the thinner it gets, and in turn the oil pressure is affected. Thinner oil is pumped faster through the engine and flows easier, therefore reducing oil pressures. HOWEVER, this would NEVER cause the oil to drop down below normal, if this happens, get the truck to a shop IMMEDIATELY to have it checked as this would probably be the sending unit as Jecht mentioned. I know my '00 4.7 oil pressure has VERY slight changes in oil pressure, usually stays just below the last line in the normal range, I believe this to be around 60psi.

well, I use mobile 1 and change it every 3k miles I dont think with that type of schedule It would be that bad. I know I can go longer with Syn, but an oil and filter change is so cheap why not do it for safe measure. My guage swings left to right alot, but always stays within normal temp range soo I may ask my Mechanic to check out the oil pressure sending unit for me. If anyone else has an Idea as to what it could be I would like to hear it. Thank you guys Much Appreciated!!

when in doubt, check it with a mechanical pressure gage. the dodge FSM states min. 6psi @ idle and min.30(i think)@ 3,000 rpm.

I had this exact same issue with my '01 CC about after about 10,000 miles dealer replaced the oil send unit under warranty.
You should get it checked just to be safe 'cause if it's not the next problem you might have is loss of engine power or, god forbid, parts smashing through the block
