By my calculations you gained 3.21854HP before the cat but lost 4.652314 after the cat for a net loss.

Unless you put on some neat graphics or a wing.
THAT should more than make up for the lost HP.

kinda late for wondering now since it's already done. you may have lost some low-end grunt.

weightset, you may have lost some low end torque, but other than that you should be fine. I installed a Dynomax Ultraflow SS muffler on my 4.7 dak, and according to my butt dyno, I didn't lose hardly any (although a little) Low end, however I did not change the pipe size (still 2.5 in/out) so that helped me somewhat.

I see this tail pipe infermation here on a regular basis > Going with your thoughts on keeping your horsepower or even increasing it by changing pipes or mufflers why is it you want to restrict your exaust but at the same time put headers on to increase flow > How about drag racers > These guys take there racing very serious > There object is to win and that means you need the best running rig out there not counting driving skill > These guys have no tail pipes > No mufflers > No cats > and in fact run an oversized pipe off each cylender about as long as my arm > Do you not agree there doing everything possible to get every pony they can out of there engine > Where is the exaust restriction now ? Let your engine breath free with intake and exaust and it will give you 100% > I have no doubt a bunch of you well disagree here > so be it >

OBI03 - what the drag racers in your example are doing is trying to get every pony out of their motor at HIGH rpm; not most power throghout the range as needed in a daily driver. Exhaust pulses are tuned by the length and width of the pipes, for non race as well as race aplications it is important to understand this. Even in your race example, note that there is a pipe off each cylinder - not just an opening in the head. Those pipes are tuning for high rpm power. It does seem a little strange the original poster is necking down to 2 1/4" after opening up to 3".

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I just wanted to send an amen to OBIO3. Nicely said. Backpressure or no backpressure...it's the tuning that counts. I've said this many times before, and it's still true: Full length headers do an excelent job of scavenging the cylinders by themselves, so you want as little restriction behind them as possible. Exhaust manifolds don't scavenge well at all by nature of their design, so the rest of the exhaust system needs to be of the appropriate size to match the desired powerband(big=hp, small=tq).

Kowalski, the original poster mentioned dual tailpipes, so I suppose he meant dual 2 1/4 tailpipes. Your post was accurate as far as I could see too. (I hadn't read it all the way before I wrote the previous post, my bad) Finally, some people who know exhaust systems...

I wasn't actually trying to cut anybody down > my real point bad as I made it was...... Why do all these guys buy there exaust syetem and THEN wonder how well it's working AFTER it's already on > lots say buy your LARGE or performance exaust system first in antisapation to mods > That can not and will not ever work as intended > Buy your mods then start your study in conjunction with the engine your running and the mods you have laying on the floor > And what ever you do modify the intake to match the breathing capabilities of the moded engine with the proper exaust > You want an engine that can truely perform you'll have it >
