i bought a 2000 dakota v6 ext cab auto recently. the tranny smells burnt but runs fine so i just did a service on it. thats when i noticed the crankshaft pully wobbling like it was out of balance or something, all the bolts are tight and in place.I think the front and rear crank seals are leaking too, b/c there is oil after i wiped them clean. What could my prob be? Im 16 yrs old so be detialed, but i have some knowledge.

Remove the belt, and the balancer center bolt. Now grab the balancer with two hands and shake it around. If it's firmly mounted, you won't be able to move it. If it wobbles, replace it. Unfortunatly, if it's wobbling because it's loose on the crank snout, replacing it may not help the problem. If it's been going on long enough it may have worn the crank snout.

When/if you replace it, be sure and check depth. When the balancer is fully seated on the crank snout, the snout should be a little bit lower than the center of the balancer, like about 1/16-1/32".

if the crank snout is bad would that mean the crank is bad?

Yes. It can be repaired by spray welding and turning, but it has to be removed for that.

Put it back together and don't worry about it too much. Keep an eye on it, though. AT every oil change, I would re-check it.
