Subject: Pinion seal IP: Logged
Message: 2004 Dakota 2wd QC 58000 miles.
My pinion seal is leaking. Is it difficult to replace?
I tried this with my old 1974 Dodge van and I could never get the bearing load adjusted right and ended up with a whining rear end.

Message: Unless you remove the bearing and spacers and change things reinstalling you can't screw up the ring and pinion > Just be sure you get things real tight > You can tell a lot by the effort it takes to losen the nut on the yoke > Torquing is really the best but you can cheat on this one if paying attention > My guess is on your van you never tightened the nut good enough and it came lose causing your whine

Message: No, you have to preload the pinion nut to spec. YOu can't just tighten it real tight. Well you can, but it is not the correct way unless you like changing rear end parts. If you don't have the tools and/or the know how, I would just pay to have it done at a knowledgable shop. Your truck isn't that old, fix it right.

Message: That nut has (or should have) at least 250 lb/ft of torque on it, according to my 2004 FSM.

Message: I agree with both you guys > As I said tho it can be done IF YOU PAY ATTENTION > also said torquing is proper > I have done this with out torquing in a pinch with no problems > Got to be able to judge close to right adjustment > Your not loading the ring and pinion > Only the bearing

Message: If the pinion uses a crush washer you need to be careful. If it uses shims you should be able to tighten it as much as you want.
