Message: maybe if you have a 5spd w/5.10:1 gears and whatever your towing better have it's own brake system, electric/surge.
but do so at your own risk. i don't recommend it.

Message: How much could a 4cyl tow stock anyways?
I know my old 85 S-10 with 2.5l and 4 speed tranny tow'd 2 tons once.
It wasn't horrid.. lol, but it was all flat or downhill.

Message: That thing was a beast!! I think a lot had to do with the 4.XX in the rear end, and on top of that, the trailer was self braking and stuff. I never went past 40, but it was doable lol

own way, towing 5 tons.. think about more than doubling your 2
ton trailer on your 85 truck??? no way

Message: I think most people here would be surprised. No it won't tow like a Cummins would, but I've hauled some disgustingly huge loads in the bed. No trailors though. I've used my 2.5 to haul bedfulls of sand, gravel, and entire pallets of brick. The sand probably weighed close to 2000 lbs. Had the truck super low and thought the suspension was gonna pop, but nope. The 2.5 only revs to about 4500 rpms and the torque (although not much) peaks very low, so it hauls surprisingly well. I have a 5-speed MT, so maybe that helps. It definately will be slower than a V8 and the truck won't like it, but it probably will tow your trailor without breaking it. I'd give it a try. (I assume no liability for people taking my advice, because in this case it's really not too smart)

Message: most i ever towed with my 1990 3.9 was like 2 tones, and it sucked getting up to speed, maintaining speed at 55 mph was workin too
that only has 15 mor hp than your 4 banger, but i would NOT go for 5 tones, hell my 1500 is only rates for like 3.5-4 tons

Message: I've not worked on a 2.5 Dakota. Assuming they didn't downrate the tranny and rear axle, then you MIGHT be able to get it going. It's not going to be fun though, and you probably won't WANT to tow 10,000 lbs. It depends how good of a driver you are, and how daring you are with your clutch. Personally, I think it's a silly idea, but it's your truck not mine...
A hill is out of the question.

Message: Yeah, that's probably true. I wouldn't really want to haul something that weighs more than the truck itself, just because of the ability to stop. I'm not sure what the brakes are rated for.

well, electric brakes are probably recommended in any case towing larger loads. It's important that they work and you know how to adjust them properly...

Message: I installed a Bog-Warner transmisson that has a 6.10:1 gear ratio. Now I figured if I just shift in first and gun it then I would pull it no problem. Might even pass some Cummins Dodges out there.
