all dakotas are shift on the fly. means you can shift at any speed so long as all tires are spining at the same speed when you shift.

Well, it's not exactly any speed.

When shifting into 4x4 hi, do not shift at speeds above 55 miles per hour.

When shifting into 4x4 Lo, do not shift above like 15mph.

And when shifting into either mode, make sure your speed is steady, so that you are neither accelerating nor decelerating.

its not science. just shift the damn thing. i dont move my truck at all, and i keep it in neutral when shifting into low range.

Yes, and if you get stuck into 4Lo, you can makeing sweeping turns in reverse to break the hubs free. Generally it's a good idea to be drifting ever so slowly foward (in gear or neutral doesn't really matter) while shifting into 4Lo. you don't want to be going too fast. 4hi is just like described. Up to 60 mph, although as a policy I don't shift while moving very quickly. Of course it's also always prudent to look in the owners guide... just to be on the safe side.

flip the driver side visor down, thats where the instructions are on my 88, you basically need to be stopped and in N, not P to shift to nuetral or 4lo, 4 high is any speed as long as it isn't on pavement or 1 tire spinning.
