 Subject: Battery Heater

I replaced my battery yesterday and noticed a disk in the bottom of the battery tray. It had two wires running to it from part of the harness. I would imagine that it is either a heater or temp sensor. Does anyone know for sure. And if it's a heater, how does it know when to be on?? and how would I test it to see if it works??
