I have an '02 4.7 Quad cab (42K mi.), and my father has the same
truck in an '01. We have both been very happy with them. I'm also
selling mine if the deal on the '01 doesn't work out.

There really aren't many issues with Dakotas in general. Even with the recall on balljoints which might affect that truck, there are relatively few weak points in the truck.
One thing to watch just as a personal thing for you- if you are buying the extended cab to haul people around in, guess again. My 5'8" dad has made my right ear deaf with his having to sit in the back when my 6'2" brother comes along and requires the front seat. Mostly I like my club cab to put crap in the back of. If you don't need the longer bed like I do, and you just want to haul people and maybe a lawnmower, or a dirtbike if you get a bed extender, the quad cab is worthwhile.
That is a personal decision on your part; I have been happy with the club cab 95% of the time.
