Hope this works. I am attempting to use a little copy and paste html code form my web page to make this easier...
Things MAY look a little funny, so that's why.

Family (and friends) trip to
the Cinders near Flagstaff, AZ 09-03-05

My friend saved us this camp site Friday night.

Too bad it was so close to the first big hill to climb. We had
to listen to people ride their ATV's and Dune Buggies all night long!

Three tents all the same. That's because a few years ago when
we were each buying "Dune" camping gear we all bought at the same store.
Wal-Mart. Funny coincidence.

I'm starting to want a Toy Hauler / Trailer to store my ATV's
in and sleep in.

It's getting tough to pack my families gear on the truck and
12' trailer for these trips.

Two full size ATV's and two kid's 90's.

2.5 hours from my home in North West Arizona Valley and things
look a bit different.

It's WAY too hot for going to the Dunes this time of year. So
this is my alternate to the "Dunes". The "Cinders".

This weekend it was a high temp in the low 80's and dropped
down to the high 40's at night.      Perfect.

One of my Rug Rats wanted to do some stove top cooking the
next morning.

We got the full riding gear for this one (the more accident
prone 8 year old).

Soon we will buy the full gear for the 10 year old as well.

This is "100 Dollar Hill" at the Cinders.

Look close to the top and you can see a ATV climbing it. That
is how BIG this hill and many others are out at the Cinders.

These hills make the hills at the Dunes at Gorden's Well look
SMALL!

The color and texture of the Cinder's (like low density Lave
Rock) varies here and there.

Some areas are large craters. Some are large hills. Some with
Pine Trees throughout.

Deep into the Pine Tree area are some hills small enough to
train the kids on.

Not too mention it takes a LOT of horsepower to climb some of
them hills.

These smaller hills were enough work for the girls to climb as
them tires dig with the paddle tires.

And just across the road from our camp was this guy I know
from the DodgeDakota web forum known as ProwlR/T :)
He bought himself a new YFZ450 so he's got himself a pretty fast bike.

Funny coincidence how his friend's camp was so close to ours.
We talked on the phone for 15 minutes trying to figure out where each other was
once he arrived Sat morning.

Then we realized we could see each other from across the way,
but each of our Dakota's view was blocked from our camps... DOH!  :-)

Dodge Dakota and ATV enthusiasts unite!

Well. It was a nice trip but we only stayed one night and rode on Saturday then came home.
We sleep in the tents and that is a little rough with the entire family and hard to get ANY SLEEP when you listen to Banshee's and Rails running around your camp all night long!

I am looking into getting a small Toy Hauler if possible. Can't go too big and still tow with the Dakota though :(

Anyway. Got the family up there finally (without the Snow) to see them giant Cinder hills. And hopefully them (non member) bozo's who talked sh*te to me in the other thread will see that I do do things with my kids :)

looks like good fun! i do mx/desert riding, but quads, hills and camping are always good times :)

one thing i wanna suggest though. you showed the picture of one of your young ones in full gear for protection. awesome move, i don't go riding without it, but i notice she's wearing tennis shoes. get her some motocross boots. it might be a little tougher to shift on that quad with stiff boots, but i probably would have had to quit riding/racing by now if i didn't have good boots on for some of the ankle twisters i've endured. other than my helmet, my boots are my most injury saving things i own.

i know i'd have pins in my left one for sure, it twisted hard enough to keep me off it for a few weeks even with brand new alpinestars. foot went down, and then in under the weight of the bike on a sweeping corner, the back of my foot against the front of the peg and the rest went down and under the bike as it slid out. wasnt fun.

in tennies with no ankle support, and you take a foot off in a tip over on a quad, itd easily wreck and ankle/foot/leg.

anyway didn't mean to bum out your thread, but something you should seriously consider for their sake in my opinion. have fun out there!

looks like you have a pretty good setup with your atv's. i'm from windsor, ontario, and a local kid (7 yrs. old)
was killed about 3 wks ago when one of these rolled over on him. now the provincial gov't may limit the minimum age to drive atv's at 16.typical kneejerk reaction. your 8 yr. old is well protected, but "accident prone", as you stated. protected or not, a freak accident could easily kill an 8 yr. old. dead is still dead, with or without protection. i hope you all have/had a good weekend. i enjoy reading your posts, and keep them coming. p.s. - i'm not preaching, just passing on a story.

racerX, yup her boots will be next as will be gear for the 10 yr old. That sh*t is expensive! And they don't need to shift these 90's. they are concentric drive. Just need to operate the gas and the brake. That's it!

They only rode for the day and never left camp except for that one ride out where I had the camera.

yeti, yeah sometimes a kid gets hurt. But no more likely on a ATV than crossing the damn street these days.

My kids are only on 90's that I can pick up fairly easily. When I let them ride the Polaris a few times, THAT is scary. I can barely pick up one end and not that far at that.

We must have saw at least 10 kids around 12 or so riding Banshees and Raptors out here at the Cinders. That is kind of crazy sh*t right there!

We watch these kids pretty closely right now.
I disciplined them for riding too close to trees at our camp BEFORE they had a chance to get hurt.

So far so good. I'm sure they will get hurt one of these days. I also think the knee and elbow pads are a good idea. But the 8 yr old didn't like them. But hopefully she will just listen to us and where them.

We drove around yesterday looking for Toy Hauler's small enough to tow behind the Dakota. First place we went to had the smallest one and it was 8,000 Lbs as it sat empty and rated 12,000 GVW with it loaded!

Not to get discouraged so quickly we drove around and found a dealer with more smaller ones.
Found one around 20 ft or so and was just 4,800 Lbs empty and rated around 7,700 Lbs loaded. That would be perfect.

It didn't have the electric operated beds that lowered and all that. You had to unfold them and they were light weight. But that's fine until I get a F350 or something years down the line.
"I don't want to trade my Dakota away..." I said.

At least the lighter one still had the bathroom, stove, referigerator, A/C, etc.

Oh well. Have to see if we can clear up some bills to get one of those things. WOuld be nice compared to sleeping in tents. :p

you could always drop for those future mods on your list (4.10s and boost) and have plenty of pulling grunt :)

i grew up on dirt bikes and atvs, since about 7 yrs old. some valuable lessons to be learned about taking care of what you own and keeping yourself out of trouble. sure its dangerous, and freak accidents happen, but freak accidents happen in football/basketball/soccer etc, and anybody could get in a freak accident driving to or from anything. when i have kids i'll be hooking them up with bikes and stuff for sure.

plus, it was always leverage for my parents. "go help dad get all the chores done and help get this place cleaned up and get good grades or youre not going riding this weekend!!"

YUP!!!!

What I need is BOOST for my yamaha Warrior.

It lacks power compared to the YFZ450, Banshee's, etc when it comes to them big hills.

Where the Warrior rocks is when I'm going off road. It is very well balanced and seems very water proof when submerged seat high in creek crossings :)

Since I swapped in the 11:1 forged piston, it can climb all of the hills at Gordens Well Dunes.

But the Cinders is approx 7000 ft alt so it robs like 25% of your power right there!

I saw a small turbo for a motorcycle on ebay finally but a little rich for me. It all sat in the guys hand!

That would be cool!
