Basically I've read that the 5-speed manual is just not a heavy duty tranny at all. The auto's are beefier especially the 5-45RFE built to withstand the Hemi line.

Mine also has a factory tranny cooler so I'm set except for the 3.55 gears.

I am really thinking of 4.56's now. Was going to go 4.10's for performance and light towing.
But now that we are dead set on buying a toy hauler the 4.56's will help with a 7,000 to 8,000 trailer loads!

I figure if the RPM's are really too high at higher highway speeds I can fix that later with taller tires anyway.

Yeah, Dodge calls it a HD (heavy duty) 5 Speed Manual tranny, but New Venture Gearing calls it medium duty. It does have a 12,000# GCWR rating from NVG. I guess that qualifies for medium duty loads.

Get those gears and get used to towing at 65MPH. Really, I feel that running 12,000# and more at speeds over 70MPH is flirting with (unnecessary) danger. Too much can happen too quickly...

I have found that when pulling my trailer (in 4th gear - 1:1) that unless the engine is running at least 2500RPMs even slight grades will wear down my speed 'till I drop to 2100 or so. When that happens I drop into 3rd and zoom back up to the speed I want without any opposition from my rig. (3rd gear pulls like a monster!) Remember that I have a lot to overcome: the weight *and* a huge sail area. You'll have that to contend with also. I affectionately call it my 5000# parachute.

I'm thinking you'll want to keep the RPMs above 2500 so the engine is on top of the load. Maybe the 4.56s will let you do that.

Have you settled on the brand/model of toy hauler yet?
