Subject: "Belly Pan" Gasket Leak
IP: Logged

Message:
I think my Intake Manifold Pan Gasket (Belly Pan Gasket) is leaking. However, just want to be sure before I take it to a dealer.

I am consuming a bit of oil, maybe a quart every 1,500 miles, with no leaks or drips. So, got on here and found where this can happen if the belly pan gasket is leaking.

I looked down into the throttle bottle and it seemed a bit shiny, but couldn't tell if it was oil, because the oil is so clean. So, I put a small piece of rag on a stick and put it down there. The rag did soak up some oil.

Question - Should there by any oil down there, or is any an indication that I have a leak?

Thanks for the help, just want to be as informed as possible before I call the dealer since the truck ('99 V8 5.9 L) is still under warranty.

Phillip

I just took this job on recently. It seems the oil isnt straight down from where the butterfly valve is so you might not see it by looking in there. It collects near the back of the pan. It was a big job but I had a lot of fun doing it. I wouldnt say the same if it didnt work afterwards though.

This is a common problem, but before you do anything, pull a couple of spark plugs and see if they are oil fouled,(a black wetness),that will tell you if you have a leaking intake manifold because you will burn it.And unless you know you have a good dealer to go to I would recommend you do the job yourself or have a shop you TRUST do it,I try to never take my R/T to the dealer, they are scum in southern Cal.If you do it yourself look into buying the gasket from Kenne Bell, his gasket installed correctly will never leak again,I personally have seen them stand up to 10 pounds of boost from a blower.Good luck with your Dak.

I recently replaced mine as well. I had a really bad leak (or was there for a long time) as there was a lot of oil in my intake, bad plug fouling and knocking. There is also a vaccuum leak test you can perform. I can't remember the specific steps but I'll look in my shop manual tonight and repost tomorrow with the procedure if need be. As far as I know there should be no oil in the intake .

Mark,
Just looked at you "fixing it" picture. Why did you pull the valve covers? I replaced my belly pan gasket a couple of months ago and didn't have to pull the valve covers. Was it one of those "while I'm in there" kind of things? Just wondering.

The valve covers had a lip that stuck out past the edge of the heads and were in the way of taking the intake manifold off. It wasnt too big of a deal because I just flipped over the valve cover gaskets and put them back on. new gaskets woudl have set me back about $40 I think.

Thank you for all the responses. I will poke around for the "vacuum" test so I know for sure.

I know what you mean by not trusting the dealer, I have had some bad experiences myself.

my 96 V6 with 85K miles would not idle. Good local shop says I have a very bad intake manifold leak, that there is a service notice on this, and that they have done several other Dakotas with the same problem - cost will be about $600. Why does this happen? [that is, is it a meterial or assembly problem? does the gasket disintegrate or shift out of position?]
will it happen again? Are there any other service notes on 96 V6 Dakotas? Where can I review them?

My 93 Dodge Dakota with 184,235 miles on it, was geting 10 miles to the gallon and I replaced the Intake Manafold Pan Gasket. And now it gets aobut 13 to 16 miles to the gallon. But I would want to get what we got on a trip, 19.2 miles to the gallon.

did you look at the picture posted earlier inthis thread? if you're going to do it for the first time, spend 20 bucks on a Chilton's or Haynes service manual.

"im just woundering if its worth it"

that depends on if your "buddy" is really picky or not. is he likely to come back to you if something's not quite right? i'm sure it'll be a good days worth of work. it all depends on skill level and amount of tools you have available.
