I can take the moniker of HOTDOG but could you leave the cursing off the board? As a Christian I find the use of foul language to degrate others to be highly offensive.

Tom,

So it's all your fault, is it? I understood what you were saying with your last post. I just find it funny how some of the other posters on this thread have a certain diametric opposition to their logic.

The only way we will ever change our wasteful ways is through market forces. Plainly stated, when it becomes too expensive to drive huge SUV's we'll drive small cars. I'm a carpenter, like Jesus was, and I often see huge vehicles with one person in it.

It's their right to drive whatever they can afford to drive, afford to being the operative wording. Since I use my Dakota as a work vehicle I can write off a portion of my expenses related to it's use and upkeep but i would never dream of getting a huge truck for my small needs.

I was simply expressing my satisfaction with the notion that the only way we will ever change our ways is when our wallets force us to.

Gas stations don't make much money on gasoline sales. This is why most now have convenience stores. The oil companies and in many cases the distributors make money on gasoline.

Jim, I am a corporate bond trader. I can be blamed for many things but not for oil ;) Oil does affect the prices in my market. You are also correct when you say that it is the free market forces that will force us to conserve. As I said earlier, want lower prcies, consume less. I have two Dak's. A 2004 V6 Quad cab. My wife uses it for here printing business where it is used to all large print jobs and it is our family vhicle to haul my 3 kids to hockey. It rarely ever has one person AND an empty bed. My other Dak is my Shelby which is my "collectible" and it is driven about 500 miles a year, max. My daily driver is an 04 Jeep Wrangler Willys. THough I live in NEPA and work in NYC I take a commuter bus rather than drive. Even my race car is fuel efficient. It is a 99 Neon whoch will still get 35 MPG.

Man, I wish I knew how to use less. I drive 60 miles round trip to work each day. There is no public transportation for me to take and nobody close enough to carpool with. At least it is mostly interstate miles. Wife drives a 4 cyl breeze to get the kids to school. We rarely take a vacation and don't do any "nonsense" driving, unless you want to call driving to the "Y' twice a week nonsense. A second job might be in the works to help offset the cost of gas. Can't trade in my Dak since I won't get nearly what its worth and I'm getting 20mpg now with the drop in K&N filter. Yeah, I agree we have to consume less, but I get the feeling others are in the same boat as far as no public trans. to work and trading in vehicles won't work in their favor.

only problem with that statement is that oil companies own most gas stations..

exxon owns and operates all exxon stations and mobile stations

chevron owns and operates all chevron and texaco stations

BP owns and operates a few.. etc etc

each year oil companies produce record profits... but ya also gotta consider that each year we are using more and more oil

That’s not entirely correct. You’ll find that independents or a local distributor who will own a handful of stations will own most gas stations. Like in my case, while my partner and I owned the franchise, we only rented the property from Shell Oil. Shell owned the building and the pumps and preferred to keep it that way because they don’t have any of the expense from operating the station. They make their money on the wholesale gas sales to us and the rent they charged us but it was our responsibility to handle staffing, ordering, utilities, taxes, insurance, etc… The oil company gets all the benefits with minimal risk.

Great now the use of the Hotdog has spread. Well as for prices I would love to see it top off at $3/gal here but probably no such luck. To many things run off gas and the need for it will never stop until another source is available. People will travel less but the money will be spent somewhere so I dont think they're that worried about the economy and gas or they're gonna have to do something drastic. The average Joe won't be able to afford to go on vacation unless it's to their backyard. Right now gas is only 2.75 but as I post that it could go up to 3.75 for all I know.

I just went down, topped off the Dakota and filled a half dozen cans for use in my log spliter this weekend. I have 12 cords ready to split for this winter. Anyhow, $3.199 a gallon for regular unleaded. Super was $3.499. I'm lucky I work from home so I only have to fill up once every few weeks. I feel for you guys who have to fill up daily.

Most gas stations are not owned by oil companies. They are small businesses. I know that NONE of the stations in my area ae owned by the oil companies. I also know that none of sthe stations in Brooklyn, NY when I was growing up were owned by the oil companies. They are franchised. It is also common to see a station change brands, but not owners.

Exxon/Mobile DOES not own all stations selling its products. I know an owner of a station which until recently sold Exxon. One of my father's friends owned a Mobil station. as far as BP/Amoco, in NE PA the Orloski family owned a chain of Amoco stations until seling out to Unimart. Know your stuff.

Gas went up from $2.65 last night to $3.09 this morning...freakin' outrageous.

About the comments saying the gas stations aren't making much off their gas sales...you're definitely correct (about the independently owned ones anyway). A gas station attendant was recently run over and critically injured by a man who pumped $52 worth of gas and tried to drive off without paying...the attendant tried to block him and make him stop and instead the guy just punched it and plowed right into him. The media did a lil research while talking to the owner of the gas station. In order to make up that $52 loss from the guy driving off, they would have to put an additional 30,000 gallons of gas that day. Crazy huh?

Unfortunately, it's not just the gas for our vehicles that get us. When transportation costs go up, so does everything else. Not only can I not afford to drive to the grocery store, I can't afford to shop when I get their either. I wonder what caribou tastes like?

Jim, since you are a cristian so much like Jesus, maybe you should get a donkey and a cart. Oats are cheaper than gas and you can save the manure for heating your house and fueling your lanterns. When you guys refer to the "government" you must realize that we are controled by a global government where all the world leaders control your fate. And yes, I have been around the world many times in very revealling areas.
