Subject: Saving Fuel - New Suggestion IP: Logged
Message: I commute only five miles to work. It's through city streets, and often takes 25-30 minutes. Yeah, do the math on that one. A lot of that time is spent sitting at intersections waiting for the light to change; seems like I always manage to catch the yellow. I travel through 4 major intersections with very long cycle times, 3 - 3.5 minutes each.
So last week I decided to try something new. Whenever I catch a yellow, I turn the engine off. I watched the lights and traffic closely, so I could turn it back on just before the green. Each light is about 3 minutes, 4 intersections, twice a day. That's about 2 hours of idling ever week. 2 Hours!
Around town mileage went from 11 to 16. That's almost a 50% improvement!
Now, the down side of this is that your using the battery and starter a lot more, and they will wear out faster. Eventually, the cost of fuel will rise to the point that it becomes cost effective. And during the winter I won't do that so I can keep warm. In the summer I don't use the AC, so that doesn't matter.

Message: Hey .boB, I know we are supposed to be talking about Daks in the forum, but if you only have 5 miles to work thru the city, have you considered a motorcycle or Vespa scooter in the spring/summer months? I drive 35 miles each way, mostly interstate, and I wish I had your type of commute. Yeah, the heavy city traffic/intersections would get aggrevating, but it might be worth a try to get a scooter for fuel savings.

Message: When the weather is halfway decent I ride a motorcycle. In the spring and summer I get rained on a lot because we have those afternoon rain showers; not a big deal if you're prepared for it.
But we've had torrential rains over the last couple of weeks have severe lightning and street flooding. Tough to drive through in the Dakota, and nearly impossible on a bike.
Fortunatly, here in colorado I can ride year round and get 45 mpg.

Message: I wish I could drive around without the air on. Here in Georgia, you have to have the air on, or you end up being soaked by sweat by the time you get to where your're going.
What are the temps there in Colorado?
