I went for a drive Friday night and as I was going down this very dark road,I turned to my friend and said. " It would suck if an Elk ran into the road." About 3 miles down the road running about 65mph I see this black mass, so I let off the gas and swerved to the right and before I could jump on the binders, BANG!!!! I hit the black mass. Total system shutdown. All I had was lights at this point. We coasted to a stop about 1\4 mile from where we hit this thing and I tried to get out,but my door would not open,so I climbed out the otherside and asked my bestfreind "What the Hell did we just hit and he said it was a cow." Yep!!! a damn 1300# cow ran across the highway and I hit the freakin thing..
I do beleive that my 1993 Dakota is a total loss and it just burns me up that a damn cow did it. That truck was the most relyable thing I have ever owned. This really bites the big one..So I don't have a clue at this point if I will buy another Dakota or get something older like a 340 Dart or something like that...Goodluck to all and lookout for them damn cattle!!!!!

Those open range laws suck. What state ya in? If there is not an open range law, the farmer who had a cow loose is responsible for the cost of your damage.

That's total BS! What kind of morons created those open range laws?!

If I ever hit a cow in one of those states and someone tries to make me pay for it AND my own vehicle's damage, I guess by law I'll pay for it...BUT that f'n farmer's paying to have his jaw reconstructed out of his own damn pocket.

I would not even think of tryin that fella. colorado has a "make my day" law in which that if a person feels threatend by any one, they have the right to shoot ya dead, right there on the spot. florida has a "my castle law" that allows you to protect your home, property and anyone within your home, but the colorado law allows you to defend yourself anywhere, in your house, car, walking down the street, out in the woods, etc. plus the attacker, meaning you in this case, pays for the attackee's hospital bills and pays restitutuion for any damages and does jail time. this is on top of the open range laws, which date back to the 1800's, before cars were invented.

I think you jinxed yourself,,,

Couple of years ago a farm truck pulled onto the freeway in front of me hauling about 20 bales of hay in the bed. There were real strong headwinds, 30-50MPH, and as he sped up to 75 there was a lot of hay leaves/stalks blowing off the bales. At this point I jinxed myself,,,

I looked over at the wife and said "by the time he gets where he's going he's not going to have any hay left". Before I had time to turn back and look at the road, my wife exclaims $#(&% as 4-5 hay bales fall off the truck and into my travel lane. I didn't total the truck, but the Dak's suspension isn't designed to drive over hay bales at 80MPH.

Got to admit that I was a little gun shy of driving past trucks hauling hay for a while and surely didn't say anything about the hay falling off the truck anymore...

About 15 years ago one of the village cops was tooling down a concession road when he got behind a truck loaded with hay bails. He was behind it for about 2 miles before he noticed the hay wasn't hay.

Seems farmer Brown had just harvested his crop of Mary Jane.
