Subject: Transmission Filter IP: Logged
Message: I was going to attempt the transmission oil & filter change sometime soon along with adjusting the bands on my 99 5.2.
Is this something I can do on my own (decent mechanic here) with the help of the Haynes Manual?
Thanks

Message: Unlike my Tacoma, which Toyota nicely outfitted with a drain plug for the auto trans pan, the Dakota requires removal of the pan to drain the fluid.
A Haynes manual will have that procedure.

Message: It's easy to do however, the front band adjustment is a pain in the ass. I did mine on ramps so I removed all the bolts except two and let the pan swing down from the front.
Get a nice big pan and lay cardboard down if you have an asphalt driveway. Tranny fluid eats asphalt. Also get the reusable gasket from the dealer. It's worth the money. Make sure you have an inch/pound torque wrench.
I used ATF+4 and after the change and band adjustment it felt like I had a new truck. What JimmyD said about the drain plug is true. I think it's stupid and cheap that they don't put a drain plug on tranny pans, at least GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler don't.
It's easy and takes no more than an hour, just be prepared for a bit of a mess.

Message: Install a drain plug when you have the pan off. I got one from advance made by "HELP". It was under $5. Drilled 1/2" hole, bolted on. other places carry them as well.

Message: The pan must be removed to gain access to the filter (or filters, depending on the transmission you have), typically attached to the underside of the valve body.
Filter o-rings (if used) should be in the package with the new filter. Know ahead of time if your filter uses o-rings so you can be sure you get one.
Although I have not yet done this procedure on my Dakota yet, I have done it on:
'00 Jeep Grand Cherokee
'98 Toyota Tacoma
'92 Ford Ranger
'96 Nissan pickup
I get to do the Dakota's next month.
When you get the pan off, wipe the inside real good to get out all the residue.
There may be a magnet or two in that pan. If so, make sure they go back in the same spots in the pan.
As Dan M stated, a drain can be easily added.
