First, I believe that picture was really immature! We don't find things funny in here!

Second of all, why would you want to file a class action lawsuit?! This is clearly a case of owner abuse! It really makes me mad that people abuse their trucks and then blame the manufacturer! Why do you think you can abuse your brakes by using them to slow your vehicle and bring it to a stop!?!? Of course your rotors warped!

I'll bet you probably even expect to put junk in your bed and then try to speed down the highway at 55 mph! Maniac! What really pisses me off are those guys that think just because they have a 4x4 Dakota, that they can drive it in harsh conditions like dirt! It takes all kinds. No wonder ball joints go bad.

You forgot about starting it in the first place. Really bad on things such as your starter.

Hi, Just bought '01 Dak quad cab 4.7L, 45,000m. and was told by owner it would need brakes soon, test drive confirmed w/pulsating pedal so no big deal I thought warped rotors, I'll get new tires and brakes and be set. Then I found this site and now wonder if I bought into a can of worms. Looks like new oem parts may not solve this problem, I really like this truck, for my needs (kids, motorcycles)it's perfect and the engine is peppier than my '92 Dak 5.2, which by the way has 50,000m. and never had a brake problem...yet. Now I think I can feel a slight pulsing in my wifes '98 Durangos brake pedal @ 50,000+ miles and she is a very conservative driver, uses it to commute, no hauling, towing and rarely goes over 65mph, just loved the early Durango style. Anyway, good info on site, will have to see what local dealer will do for me as I have 2 yrs. left on transferred bumper to bumper warranty.

After reading earlier response pertaining to out of adjustment rear drums and cheesy star adjusters not doing their job, I pulled all wheels to ck. discs and drums ('01 Quad cab 4.7l., 2wd 4 wheel ABS). Discs looked o.k. for 45,000 miles, pads about 75% gone. The rear shoes looked o.k., also about 75% gone but those adjusters on the rear are sure cheap and flimsy and wouldn't spin the adjuster when I pulled on the adj. cable simulating the self adj. idea when backing up and hitting the brakes. So I put it all back together and adjusted the rears through the little adj. ports by hand until I felt resistance. A test drive was amazing, no more brake pedal pulsing or jerking up to a stop. So I hit the freeway and tried some higher speed off ramps, again no more pulsing. I can only conclude in my case that with the rear drums out of adjustment the front discs were supplying most of the stopping force with higher pressures required accentuating what still may be slightly warped rotors, I don't know but for now all seems good and for the last 2 days my head hasn't bobbed fore and aft as I come to a stop. Discs front and rear may have been Dodges answer to this problem, no adjustments necessary, does all this sound plausible?

prob quad but they only put 4 wheel disks on the 03 and 04 years. in 05 they stopped it and went with rear drums. I think it was a step backwards. glad I got an 03.

Mine have adjusted and worn properly - but I don't recall seeing this adjustment cable you claim though. I thought it was the typical arm that rubs on the star wheel when you brake in reverse. Isn't the cable just the parking brake ? Do you brake solidly in reverse before shifting into drive ?

Actually, the truck is new to me at 45,000 miles so I don't know how the previuos owner drove it as far as reverse mode. The cable I referred to is the small 1/16" cable that actuates the little arm that moves the star wheel when the shoes shift slightly when you hit the brakes in reverse, I just tweaked it with my finger to see how the action transferred to star wheel, one side tried but the other just skipped over wheel. When I do the brake job I'll modify as necessary to fix this as it should work, millions have. I wish I had found this forum first, I think I'd have looked for a later model with discs. However it is a really clean little truck. I just put a set of Michelin cross terrains on it 255/65-16s, looks and drives nice but anything is better than the worn out GY Eagles it came to me with. Now I just need a little more low end to midrange with possibly better mpg...I'll keep reading the forums to see what I can learn...Mark

I agree DakotaMan! I had a friend that was always abusing his Dakota! At least once a month in late spring and summer, he would load it up with tents and coolers, then would take it up to some dirt trail and shift it into 4-wheel-drive just to get to some campsite! Then he was mad when he had to have his transfer case rebuilt before it reached 60k miles!

Some people just don't have a clue!
