Driving home from a car show in July with my Shelby Dakota I heard a snap from my right rear wheel area and the raer wheel would lock up under braking. When I came home I hcecked the wheel and studs and all looked fine, but I noticed that the weehl had much play. I finally got around to really looking at things today and discoverd that I can move the hub in and out about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. This seems excessive. What could this be?

Thanks
Tom

Could have broke the end of the axle off that holds the "C" clip. The "C" clip keeps the axle from coming out .If it broke the axle could possibly exit the housing. Not a nice thing to have happen. Remove the rear cover and see if there is any pieces laying in there. I wouldn't drive the thing untill you find the problem. Dan

I pulled tthe wheel and brake drum and nothing looks broken there. I don't have the proper tools to pull the axle itself.

OK. The posi is broken and the axle is moving. I took it to my dealer and they want to replace the entire rear end. $700 parts and $320 labor.

You took my advise before I could even give it ......man you're good.

I put a Powertrax No-Slip unit in my 2001 4x4 in 2002.
I'm no mechanic but my do-it-yourself neighbour and I had no problems.
The instructions are awesome.

You only need new fluid and stuff to make a new gasket.

Powertrax even supplies you with a little tool to measure a critical gap.

I have no regrets ... hope you don't either.

I will keep you posted. I just found out that I can insure my Shelby Dak as a collector car with Grundy. $10,000 agreed coverage, collision, comp, theft and $300,000 liability for $173 per year. Unlimited mileage. My savings pays for the diff.
