Hey all! I was wondering if anyone has sprayed rubberized undercoating iby themselves. I was thinking of doing the underbody of my dad's truck and just wondering what your thoughts are.

I would check into POR15. Its a protective paint. Perfect for underbodies.

Don't do it. The rubberized coating traps moisture and makes rust worse. You just can't see it.

Marc, if you are wanting to protect the underside of your truck it will work good. I did my 99 when the truck was new and there was no dirt or grime on anything when I sprayed it on.
I reccomend using 3M's product, it is pricier but it has survived very well on my truck.
The downside, depending on how you have to access the underside it can be a bitch. I put the front wheels on drive on ramps and had the rear supported by jackstands fully extended. I did it outside, had a bunch of cardboard to put down and found some old clothes that I could toss when done. You will get sticky.
I also have a 92 Bravada that I did when new, it has no issues with trapped moistue/rust. It is one of the cleanest early 90's S-series around.

Because you can't get in to every nook and cranny to create the perfect seal. Moisture seeps in around the edges. Also, if you kick up a stone and create a small nick in the undercoating, you'll have another entry port.
Aftermarket and dealer installed undercoating used to be a big deal years ago, especially in the snow belt. Now you don't hear about it any more because it didn't help anything, and generally made rust worse.
There are places where undercoating is handy. I used it on the splash panels in my Cobra so the pebbles and sand wouldn't make a lot of noise hitting the bare aluminum. Like he said, I used 3M with good results. Took a long time to dry, though.

We sprayed my brothers 87 Cutlas Supreme when we got it. Never had an issue with it and he just sold it last year. We washed the underside to remove dirt and grime. Blew it out with an airhose and let dry another night or two then sprayed it while up in the air on a hoist. Can't recall much about brand of spray but just a black tar like most are I am sure. Make sure to cover items like driveshaft that would wobble when unbalanced.

years ago had dealer installed underbody on a jeep. Every summer when it got real hot and you touched that tar it would come off on your hand. Had jeep for over 10 years no rust but always gummy underbody in summer.
