Subject: Oil capacity 5.9?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys,
Upon changing my oil last week,I noticed that my truck took 7 quarts to get into the safe zone.I've changed oil in other Dodge trucks with 5.9's and they usually took 5 quarts.I've even compared my dipstick to another 5.9 stick, and they we're the same length. What gives? My truck is a 99 R/T.

should take 5 qts w/ filter according to the FSM.
overfilling can be just as bad as being low.

Did you buy youre truck used recently...dont they sell larger oilpans for the 360. Maybe you have a larger pan on there holding an extra 2qts. Or a Remote Oil filter or dual filter setup. Just a thought. I know mine only holds 5qts with filter.

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota R/T and I’m having the same
problem. Everyone is saying to only put 5 quarts in but when I
put 5 quarts in the oil does even touch the dip stick. When I
first put around 6 quarts in it, everything seemed fine.

I also noticed that online it says that the 4.7L V8 Dakota takes
6 quarts while the 5.7L V8 only takes 5 Quarts. How can a
bigger engine of the same model take less oil? Maybe they got
it reversed or maybe it just is what it is. I know I’m putting at
least 6 Quarts of oil in my engine though. Better safe than
sorry if you ask me.
