Subject: 2000 4.7 won't start IP: Logged
Message: Guys, it's a 2000 4.7L Dak Quad Cab 2WD, about 70K miles, and it's been a great truck. This morning instead of hearing the engine crank, I only hear a rapid clicking sound that seems to be just behind the dash on centerline. I'm no major wrench, but I'd like to take a shot at fixing this myself. Can anyone tell me what this problem may be, and can an old dude like me fix it? Thanks for any replies, sam

Message: Try the battery Whisperinsam.
Russell.... you SMELL gas??? Check for leaks in your fuel sytem(lines, fuel rail, injectors). I had a simillar problem without the gas smell and it was the fuel pump. Our trucks need pressure in the fuel rail to start and my fuel pump was leaking back into the tank.n Try priming the truck first. Turn the ignition on and off 5 to 10 times(wait to hear the pump stop) but don't go forward ta actually try and start the truck. Then try and start it. If it then starts, its the pump.

Message: whisperinsam it sounds like your starter solenoid is going bad. try tapping on it with a wrench and see if it starts then. the solenoid is on top of the starter. also check your battery connections and grounds.

Message: I agree with Dave. It sounds like the solenoid is going bad. Too bad Chrysler didnt mount the solenoid up seperatly from the starter like Ford does.

Message: It takes spark, fuel and compression to fire an engine. My guess would be since you changed the gasket, that its not getting enough compression. Try a compression test
