Subject: Thumping sound upon Stopping IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a question. In my '00 dak QC w/45re tranny, every once in a while when I come to a rolling stop at a stop sign or stop light, I will hear a very low "thump" sound and feel a very slight jerk in the truck. Is this the tranny shifting into 1st gear? I also hear this a LOT in my wife's '99 Cherokee Sport. I'm used to driving stick shifts and not sure if this is just "normal" for an automatic. Thanks for any help/ideas!!

Message: Seems a little bit hard for fuel to be sloshing around? I mean when it happens, I will have already been stopped for 30-60 seconds.

Message: The last time I looked at my gas tank when I replaced my pump I didn't see any baffles.
Did you just have your tranny serviced and if so you might have the wrong fluid in them and check your fluid. Most of the time the wrong fluid will cause problems with our transmissions.Remember ATF+3 or 4.Some people say you can put an additive in and use Dextron\mercon but I shy away from doing that.Just my 2 cents.Maybe some one else knows more..goodluck

Message: Thanks Woodrow. I just purchased the truck about 3 weeks ago, so haven't had any service done to it. (checked all the fluid levels and conditions before I finalized the deal) I've only felt/heard this about 3 times in the truck (put almost 2500 miles on it already).

Message: I thought the fuel sloshing sounded a little wierd too, when I experienced this. I had a 5 speed manual. I started looking at my fuel guage when I experienced that and it happened only when the guage was in a certain range (I don't remember exactly what range).
Could find no problems that would cause that, so I could only conclude that sloshing fuel was the cause.

Message: I have noticed and feel a heavy thump or a clunk noise when I roll to a stop, or shortly thereafter. Since it will do it in or out of gear, I believe it is the rear-end. I suspect there is a high/low gear change in the rear end and it drops back into low at very low speed or zero MPH. I have not looked into this to see how the Dodge rear-end works, so it is just a theory at this point, but there isn't a whole lot of other things capable of making this noise. I also suspect this is normal.

Message: there is no 2-spd rear-end. I still think its the fuel sloshing in the tank and "popping" the sheet metal its made of... this amplifies the sound and it sounds like a clunk. my opinion

Message: Well, First off the fuel tank is not made of sheet metal it is made of HDPE or in simple terms plastic. The skid plate or heat sheild is sheet metal. With the truck at a stop or rest for 30 to 60 seconds that kinda rules out the fuel sloshing around.Sorry guys I have to disagree with you on that.
Your trans might need to be adjusted or even repaired. Might be something like a lockup soleniod that is bad. Did you do a search on this and other dakota sites about this?

Message: I just found another post with the same problems you are having. It was 2004. They were talking about the lockup soleniod being bad.I just did a general search and put in jerks at stop light. As funny as it sounds it pulled up some good reading..Goodluck and let us know what you find out...

Message: I had that same prob on my 03 dak. took it to the dealership 3 times. now it went away after the third time. they said they did nothing to and couldnt duplicate/ it but they had to as it did it when I got the truck a year ago.
as far as the fuel sloshing around. no I always have a full tank in my truck and it still did it. now if I can get that surging fixed that happends when I let off the brakes I will be happy with my truck ;-)

Message: My '01 RC will give the "clunk" with about 3/4 full fuel tank. It is strong enough that it feels like another vehicle nudged your rear bumper. Shortage of baffles in the tank is the culprit.
