Subject: What fluid in transmission? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota with a V8 5.2L engine and a manual transmission. I'm changing all the fluids and the tranny fluid has me stumped. My owners manual says to use Mopar manual transmission lubricant, and the guy at the auto store says his book says to use 75w90 gear oil.
I'm not sure what transmission I got, either the NV1500 or the NV3500.
I'm going to be changing the fluids in the drive axles too. I bought some Mobile1 Synthetic 75w90 gear oil for these. Will I need to put a friction modifier in these? I also got some Valvoline ATF3 for the tranfer case.
Will these work ok?
Thank You

Message: I don't have a Dodge manual trans, so I'm opening my mouth where maybe I shouldn't, but just to get a discussion going -- 705/90W is gear oil and would work very well. Most manufacturers recommend a certain type to prevent incompatability with the seals. Some Ford manual trans actually use auto trans fluids.
Don't know about friction modifiers -- I wouldn't think any additives are needed.

Message: Mobil 1 gear oil has friction modifiers already in it.

It says you can also add additional OE friction modifier if you want. I've always felt that the least amount of friction modifier you can get away with is better though.
I don't know about the transmission though. I'd like to know as well - I also have a '98 5.2 5sp.
