Subject: Amsoil = Better Fuel Economy ... and MPG
IP: Logged

Message:

With Regular Gasoline approaching $3 per gallon it is a good time to think about ways to increase fuel economy (mpg).

FUEL ECONOMY a.k.a. MPG

Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that. Also, the pump may have stopped pumping sooner this week compared to last, making it "seem" like you used less (or more) gallons of fuel.

It has been proven by Amsoil (and other leading oil manufacturers and suppliers) through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations (and as witnessed by most of our customers), that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).

VISCOSITY can increase Fuel Economy - a.k.a. MPG

Depending upon your driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades (5w-30 vs. 10w-40).

Tighter government regulations and increases in engine manufacturers’ demands are calling for more fuel efficient lubricants. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils reduce friction and drag better than petroleum oils, resulting in significant fuel economy increases.

In a 1.2 million mile demonstration, AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in gas mileage. Other tests have shown increases of as much as 15% under certain weather and driving conditions.

Yet, because every vehicle is different, as are driving habits and conditions, it is difficult to accurately project an exact increase.

I did on my first oil/differential change at 40K miles with Amsoil.
Changed the oil filter after 3K and will change the oil/filter again after a total of about 6K - then longer intervals after that.

I've seen about the 5% increase in mileage from about 19.5mpg to 20.5mpg - highway driving.

This is with an '00 4x4 QC 3.9L

Jecht,

Shame Shame Shame on your Dealership for charging $9 per quart for Amsoil, which is a higher price than Amsoil retail prices.

However you are correct:

SOME DODGE DEALERSHIPS NOW CARRY AMSOIL !!!

This was posted by Sephiroth 3/20/2004

Message posted by Sephiroth:

"I went in to have my brakes checked today, and when I walked into the garage the first thing I saw made my jaw hit the floor. My local dealership now uses and sells AMSOIL products!! They've got it posted on a big banner over the service-desks. GM may not have been able to get it for their 'vettes, but obviously Dodge was able to, or they found out how awesome it is and started buying at regular price! When I go in for a tranny-filter, fluid, and gasket change next week, it's getting filled with AMSOIL."

Sephiroth went on to state:

"This is at the Raleigh, NC dealership, Al Smith Buick, Dodge, Mazda. I told the guy at the desk I was astounded to see them using AMSOIL and that I had been using it for a while now. After he rode in the truck he said he'd be switching next oil-change in his Ram.

As for me, I've got it in the engine, and I'll have it in the tranny soon! Next up are the differentials. After that I need to get a dyno just for curiosity's sake. IF I get 3-5hp form the differential, and God knows how much from the engine and tranny, that'll be enough without any heavy mods. Well, for all I do anyway. If it is a significant gain, I'll post the results."

So you're going to spend $40 extra per oil change, to save at most 10% on your MPG. Which means you'll break even by the time you have change your oil again, and this doesn't include the cost of the filter, just the oil.

Save you're money and just lay off the pedal, you'll save more, and spend less.

Just some ideas, I'm probably going to try some Amsoil at next oil change anyway.

MadMason,

Amsoil is currently available in all 50 States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand. I have not read any news indicating expansion into Germany. I wish Amsoil would expand into England where my brother-in-law owns a Dodge & Chrysler Dealership, and a Ferrari and Maseratti Dealership.

Snake Oil,

Where and why do you think you would spend "$40 extra per oil change" using Amsoil? Sorry, but your calcualations are wrong ... VERY wrong! Amsoil is reasonably priced for the superior quality of our products, and Amsoil is the only motor oil company in the world offering a preferred Customer Program whereby you can save approximately 20% off retail prices across the board. Amsoil Preferred Customers pay the same wholesale price for Amsoil products that I do as an Amsoil Dealer.

when I switched from Mobil 1 to amsoil my milage went down by 2 mpg, after 9000 miles and 3 changes I went back to moble 1 and my milage went back up by 2 mpg over the last 22000 miles, would you care to comment as to why your product is not as good as the other guy's in my "test" and don't say it is related to my right foot, as I use cruise control and a very light foot, the tach NEVER goes over 2400 rpm.

Honestly ... I don't know as I have never heard of those "dramatic" differences in results before. Let's see if we can find the culprit (and therefore the answer):

1) Were you using the same viscosity?

NHTSA site lists various technologies planned to meet the tighter Light Truck CAFE standard between 2005-2007. Assuming the reference oil was 10w-30 here are the results (increase in MPG when switching viscosities): 1% 5W-30, 2% 5W-20, 3.1% 0W-20. Of course the opposite is true as well if you switch from a lower wt. viscosity to a higher wt. viscosity.

2) Did you use the same gasoline from the same station during the same "seasons"?

Gasoline from different suppliers will give you different MPG results. Also, the fuels during different times of the year (Winter vs. Summer) will give you different MPG. Winter fuel will give you lower MPG because of the different additives vs. a Summer fuel. Also, fuel from different stations (or later in the month when the tanks are low) could have more oxygenates which rob the engine of potential energy (performance), which results in lower MPG.
__________________________________________________

Fuel economy is difficult to accurately predict ... and per your request I won't get into the discussion of asking if you were calculating MPG with the "fill-up the tank" method, or with an onboard computer, which is very accurate and what I have used since 1994. I personally get higher MPG using Amsoil SAE 5w-30 vs. anything else I tried, and ONLY became an Amsoil Dealer after i saw the results with my own eyes for almost a decade (started using Amsoil in 1994 ... became an Amsoil Dealer in 2002).

I have seen an increase in fuel economy since switchin to AMSOIL

Plus, MOBIL has increased the price on it's top of the line 15,000

AMSOIL. :-)
