Subject: wheel bearings? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 3.9 4WD Dak with close on 100K, and have been told by a reasonably knowledgeable friend or two that this problem could be my wheel bearings. However, I thought I'd consult some specialists. :-)
Here it is:
I recently (last two weeks) began getting a noise in the front right that I would best describe as either the sound of a rock in a rock tumbler, or maybe a cards-in-your-spokes kind of noise (TICKETY-TICKETY-TICKETY). It's not present at idle, but is noticeable almost as soon as I begin to move. It does not go away at higher speeds; it just...well, sounds faster. Turning does not seem to affect it. If this is indeed the wheel bearings, what is my best option? From what I have read here, it seems that to replace bearings, I'm replacing the entire hub assembly. Is this something that a non-mechanic-type can do with relative ease? From what I can determine, the part's not cheap, but not outrageous either. I'm just trying to avoid getting raped on labor.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Message: your friends are correct. The job is rather easy if you have the tools. I have heard that you can replace the bearings, but they have to be pressed in. Do a search, should be able to find the part #. Dont drive too much with the bearings shot, My wheel actually locked up at 20MPH and caused more damage to the suspension.

Message: You do not the whole assembly. You can take off hub assembly and look at the bearing numbers, take to you local Napa that has a press, and they will charge you probably 5 bucks a side.
Bearings and press work both sides around 80 bucks. Whole hub assembly couple hundred bucks per side.
