Subject: 99 Dakota Trans cooler problems, ideas?? IP: Logged
Message: I just had a shop install a trans cooler on my 99 5.2 and now my Dak is acting funny. I was driving last night, came to a stop light and tried to accelerate and my Dak wouldn't go! I had to really step on the gas to get it going, butit was almost like the parking brake was on but it wasn't. Then this morning I drove about 20 miles and my overdrive off light came on all by itself!!! Then I felt the trans downshifiting and slowing the truck down...so now I'm taking it back in to get it removed...any other thoughts on what might have happened??? Hope I haven't done any damage to the trans. Thanks in advance for advice!

Message: If the trans temp is too high, you will get exactly what you describe. Sounds like the cooler wasn't installed correctly.

Message: Well I just got a call back from the shop and they said there is too much trans fluid and they think that is causing the problem, could this be right? I kept telling them that this never happened until they put in the cooler and they are of course not wanting any part of that.

Message: Too much ATF is as bad as not enough. When it is overfilled the fluid will aerate. When the fluid is full of air bubbles it will cause many problems including what you have described.

Message: Well I took it to a trans place now, my Dodge dealer was the one who overfilled the trans fluid since it was flushed exactly 2 months ago. None has been added since, now the trans place is telling me that there's not enough pressure pumping my trans fluid in and out of my trans and that's why it's slipping. They unplugged both lines to my trans and said nothing came out when it was started. They said usually it should be "pissing" out fluid. They are looking to see if it's a bad pump. They also took out a whole quart and said it's still above the full line.

Message: Sounds like the trans place is giving you and the dealer the once over. How can they say that the dealer overfilled the trans TWO months ago and the problem just started after the trans cooler was installed. YEAH RIGHT Splain that to me with a straight face.

Message: Kev. First check to see if your trans lines
where not crossed. If thay are that's the prob.
If not take it back and have them fix the prob,
since thay installed the cooler...
