Subject: wtf....battery??? IP: Logged
Message: my dakota would not start this morning(dead battery). i hook up jumpers, wait a few minutes,...truck starts....take jumpers off....truck shuts off??!!....hook jumpers back up, truck starts, take them off, truck dies again!!! now it won't take a charge at all??!!... what the hell is going on??!!! never had that happen before!!!the eye is green on the battery...so i replaced the battery, seems to be fine now, but im wondering what would have caused this??? could the battery go bad just like that?? i had the old one tested, it had 300 c.c.a (should have 750), also it was at 10 amps, (should be 12or13) thanks for the feedback....

Message: yes, i have seen batteries that just go dead for seemingly no reason. it sounds like yours had a dead cell(10 volts vs 12volts). i've been really lucky on my '00 QC (5yrs old in Jan this yr.).I still have the original equipment battery and it seems as strong as ever.*knocks on wood*

Message: what year dak is it? how long had you had the old battery in it? when my last battery died in my 2000 4.7l the truck would jump but if i took the cables off i had to keep the RPM's above 1000 or so or else the truck would die. i posted with the same question as you and a few people said that the alternator doesn't generate enough power at idle to keep the truck running. kind of weird i think, never had another car like that.
anyway, i don't know too much about this stuff...so if you are thinking that your old battery is good and are wondering why it didn't keep your truck running i don't really have an answer for ya.

Message: I had the battery die in my '00 just the same way. I just got back from a 4 hour drive pulling a trailer, shut the truck off and that was it. Battery was completely gone. I couldn't get it started with the jumper until I disconnected the battery and hooked the jumper directly to the cables. That told me that the original battery had shorted out. This was the first time I had ever had a battery die just like that with out any warning.

Message: Just recently I was doing some work with my 18V DeWalt cordless drill. It has a car adapter charger with it so when I ran low I hooked it up to the truck. Later when I went to start the truck it just barely started and then would just die if I didn't keep up the RPMs. Charging the battery had no improvement and I had to replace it. It was a 2000 model year original battery. Seemed strange to me that the truck would not keep running on its own after starting, too.

Message: went back and found my original thread about the dead battery / not holding idle problem.
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/gen/21219.html
seems some folks think that the pcm is sensitive to low voltage and for that reason will not keep the truck running at idle. i dunno
i'm not sure if deldadak's question is about the idle issue or about why his battery would just go bad like it did.

Message: Yes a battery can go just like that. Happened to me twice(different trucks). Came to work once and went to leave and nothing same thing happened when to a grocery store once.

Message: The PCM is definitely sensitive to low voltage and can forget the idle when it goes too low. Then you have to keep the revs up for a bit with the new battery for the PCM to relearn. The truck will hold an idle for a long time with a good battery - the problem is the memory's sensitivity to bad voltage more than not having enough alternator power at low rpm. The Dakota alternator puts out as much at idle as any other vehicle.
