Subject: 22-30 mph vibration IP: Logged
Message: I am curious if anyone else has this strange vibration and what could be causing it. When I am driving between 22& 30 I get a vibration. Faster and slower speeds do not have it. The vibration is constant no matter if I am accelerating hard/soft/braking or any gear. I would think tire balance but that would get worse at faster speeds I would think. I can't say about different gears as I have the auto and don't think it will shift out at that speed.
Any ideas?

Message: OK I tried different gears and it did the same amount of shaking then too.

Message: it could be a bunch of things... the front end could need an alignment, the wheels could be out of balance, or it could be the Universal Joints in the drive shaft are worn out. After 110k on my truck I got a vibration around 35mph then again above 70mph... ended up being a worn universal joint. I got that replaced, but while it was in the shop I went ahead with an alignment and wheel balance just to be safe. I'm pretty sure it was mostly from the UJ, but the vibration is gone now and it's running smooth again

Just curious.

Message: If it's really worn sometimes u can chock the wheels and put the tranny in neutral to take the tension off the drive train. If there's slack in the joint when you shake the drive shaft that's one way to know. Sometimes if it clunks louder than usual (like someone is banging on a tin can with a hammer) when going into 1st or reverse, that could mean a worn u-joint too.
I'm not sure if this is exactly how they do it, but I think what the pro's do is jack the back wheels off the ground and try to "drive normally" when someone is underneath listening... could be kindof dangerous to do in the driveway tho

Message: I don't know how but my last post wasn't posted? I thought of all that except the alignment. I may have the UJ issue as every now and then it does make noise going from reverse to forward. Not consistant but may be a sign of getting worn. I may have to check into that. I would think they are cheap to replace but I don't know.

Message: Another classic U-joint test is to drive steady around 30-35 mph, then take your foot off the gas abruptly. If there is a loud, hard clunk that you can also feel in the drivetrain, it's usually a U-joint.

Message: Bob thanks for that reminder. I remember doing that in my dads Fury III. That got real loud. Until the shaft finally fell on my brother about 10 miles from town.

Message: The tires are possibly the original factory or maybe one change since. I just bought the truck used (85k). They are Goodyear Wrangler's (not GSA, MT ect just Wrangler). I don't think they make them anymore.
I am hoping they will grab in the snow/ice this winter and replace next year but may do it in a few months. Then I need to decide on which tire and size. 235x75x15 now and I may go with a bigger tire and undecided between Dueler Revos and BFG AT KO. I have had the revo's and liked them alot but I do like the look of the BFG better.
