Subject: Replacing Ball Joints, bushings and such

I have a 98 Dodge Dakota 4X4. It's in the shop now to replace the intermediate steering shaft and anything else that may be wrong.

They told me the control arm bushings need to be replaced. They can do that on the uppers but there is no way to replace the lowers and that you have to replace the entire control arm. I looked around online and this seems to be true.

So they have the truck for a week and it's still not fixed. They complain about getting the wrong parts from the dealer and how they pressed the wrong ball joints into the control arms. Of course i'm wondering why we are even talking about ball joints, there was no mention about them being bad. And he goes on to say that you cannot replace the lower ball joints, you have to replace the entire control arm. Though i'm pretty sure you can just replace the ball joints and not the control arm. But since we are having to for the bushings I don't see a problem.
But then I remember that I just had the lower ball joints replaced a few years ago.

I don't know, I just feel as if i'm getting ripped off and not getting clear information. And all these repairs are costing me $2200.

I had the same problems with my 2001 Dakota. The ball joints on the Dakota only lasts about 1-2 years. Also, You can't replace the front wheel bearings by themselves you have to replace the entire HUB! I had my Dakota at the dealership in June to have a state inspection done. Next thing I know they're calling to tell me that I need $1,200 in front end / suspension repairs. I got so frustrated that when I picked it up I drove it straight to the Chevy Dealer and traded it for a brand new Silverado.

So I finally got the truck back and notice that it has one new tire on it! No one ever asked me or told me a new tire was going on. So it's on the front drivers side and of course it throws the alignment off. It's new while the passenger side tire has about half of the tread so of course it's going to screw the alignment.

God these mechanics are idiots!

If this is a 97-04 2wd that is not true. I have a 99 and I have replaced both front wheel bearings without replacing the hub.
Two Timkin bearings from Auto Zone were under $ 70.00
