Subject: Rear wheel lock up - help!
IP: Logged

Message:
Took the '98 4x4 to the dealership last week - I told them that one of my rear wheels locks up when initiallly driving the car and hitting the brakes the first few times. They called me back saying my left front caliper was hanging up. Didn't really make sense but they are the pro's, they also said my rear drums were fine.

Bought a caliper from NAPA, spent a good part of Saturday running back and fourth to sears getting the right tools, bolted it on and... same problem. Finally had the girlfriend watch as i hit the brakes, sure enought the right rear was locking up.

If the pro's say the drums are in fact not out of round etc, then what do you think could be wrong? I already tried slamming the brakes hard in reverse to initialize the proportioning mechanism or whatever it is, but this did not make a difference. Ideas?

Maybe the problem is not that the right is locking but that the left is not.

Try looking at the left side rear brakes.

It sounds like you got a spring or something missing that the "pros" aren't finding...

The brake 'grabs' big time. Just touch the brake and the right rear locks up. Eventually it goes. I thought a pad was worn down to the metal or something, and rust was building up causing the problem. I used to hear the ABS kick in, it doesn't even do that now!

Could be the wheel brake cylinder on the wheel that is locking up. Sometimes the cylinders rust, leak or wear out and cause the lock up... had the same problem on an old chevy pickup once.
