Subject: Crawling under my Dak and what do I see?

Message:
Yesterday I finally pulled all of my wheels to inspect my brakes. Have been getting some squeeling similar to it hitting the "squeeler" indicator when the pads get thin.
Nope. All 4 disk brakes are at least 50% left. At 32K miles and some of it towing, I think that's GOOD compared to what I see others here post. Only have some scratches in some rotors from ROCKS most likely from the mud pits and off roading adventures of past.
Maybe the towing package and 4 wheel disk is a more heavy duty than standard brakes on a Dak??? I dunno.

So I'm crawling around looking at things. Not finding any zerk fittings to grease anything. Wondering if I should buy one of those NEEDLES for my grease gun???

Then I spot a problem...

This emmisions hose, looking to be some vapor return line about 1/2 in diameter plastic tubing looks like it's retainer broke a while back. It was against the exhaust and it melted through the tubing.

And sealed itself shut!
I didn't get any codes from this.

So I had to cut the tubing, splice it and zip tied it up away from the exhaust.
Good thing it was a vapor line, and NOT the fuel line that runs with it!

Spent a bit of time under mine today too - oil change, and I decided to try the Edelbrock IAS twin tube shocks that Rob recently pointed out are dirt cheap from summit. I'll let you guys know how they perform once I get some miles on them - not sure what makes them different from the pricier monotubes - description is similar; and while I was expecting them to look like the stock shocks with a second tube covering the rod, they look like the monotubes with just a rubber boot to cover the rod.
I don't think those needle grease fittings really do much other than make you feel good that your trying to grease the part. Sure, they surround the joint with fresh grease, but you're not really getting any grease into the joint itself and may be giving water a way in / grease a way out.
At 45,000 I still have plenty of brakes left too, and I have the rear drums that some claim are problematical because the adjusters don't work well. First time I've pulled the drums and wear is normal - adjusters appear to be working perfectly. This is a very old, time proven design - It adjusts the slack out automatically when you hit the brakes in reverse. Makes me wonder if those who have the problem with that have bad driving habbits like throwing the tranny into drive while still rolling in reverse rather than solid braking. While I agree our front brakes could be better, especially the older gen 3s like mine with the smaller rotors, here again I think a lot of it has to do with driving style. I'm no slowpoke, but I plan my braking watching traffic ahead. I see many people, even my wife who drives a bit slower than me (but still not pokey) who just fly right up on traffic ahead and then brake harder. I'll be doing a brake job on her ride at less miles than my truck that has a reputation for marginal brakes. A lot of it seems to have to do with how you take care of your eqipment.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

FWIW I am a tanker driver and we use the greaseless universals on the PTO shaft that runs the dry-bulk blower. The greaseless u-joints have given us lots less problems with failures than the greasable ones. Don't try to grease the ones without a zerk fitting.

Blanche: now why would you ask such a stupid question, you do know that it is just a picture right?

My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

man thats amazing it didnt throw a code. did the engine run any different after you spliced the hose back together. I will check mine and see if that happened to my truck. this is why you inspect your whole vehicle every so often.
