Subject: front differential leak IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys,
Need a little help(01 dakota 4x4, 4.7). The front pumpkin has a leak on the drivers side where the shaft (from the wheel) enters the pumpkin. How hard is this to replace? Any advice?

Message: Shouldnt be that hard. Its just the seal that is leaking. I have never done the work my self, but I have had many diff/shaft seals leak and it only take a good mechanic a few hrs to replace.

Message: Remove the bolts holding the CV to the axle.
Remove the diff cover.
Pull the retaining clip for the axle.
Pull the axle most of the way out.
Use the axle to pop the seal out.
Drive the new seal in and reinstall everything.

Message: Crow,
I should've waited for your reply. I ended up taking just about all of the driver side off, shock, tie rod, seperated the wishbone. Finally had access to pull entire axle straight out. Not to bad of a job really. Was done in 2 hours. Dealer quoted me around $350. I got it done for $6.50 for the seal. Time to buy me a few cold ones with the money saved. Thanks fellas.
