OK, I'll try to make this short;
2000 Dakota 4.7 4x4 87,000 mi.
#1613 on ARE truck cap website
Since brand new after a few thousand miles brakes fail first drive when cold.
Been to dealer in NY where I bought it from numerous times and they are too dumb.I left it there 1 time and they told me it was fine and when I drove it out there was 1 inch of snow on the ground and stepped on the brakes and front did nada and rears locked up for 12 feet.
Stopped , went back in and got service manager and showed him rolling tread marks on front wheels in the snow and all he could say was "I don't want to call the guy who worked on it a liar"
I said well he is full of s@#!t, he just said it was fine.
I've replaced rotors (NAPA)& pads twice and rear shoes twice too. Bled brakes with 2 cupfuls of fluid out each wheel. Fronts sometimes had tiny bubbles but not bad.
Acts like you need to pump it up because until I've hit it a few times it pops under hood and pedal sinks and rears lock.
I had a fender bender in Charlotte and abs light stayed on. On new state inspection they said it was the abs system unit under the hood was stuck and they've never seen one go bad. They replaced and I only paid labor after showing problem since new. ($2000)and pressure bled (Thank you BobMayberry Chrysler)
Still does it!
When it's cold and rainy, the next day first time I drive for a few miles I step on it at first stop sign and something bangs under the hood somewhere and pedal sinks , no fronts and rears lock. Sometimes lasts all day
I told them last oil change it still did it and they said nothing else to replace. Only thing left is master cylinder and proportioning valve.
Any ideas? My Dad has a 2001 Dakota and his does the same thing and he only has 6000 miles on his.
He had rear wheel cylinders replaced after they found leaking but it still does it too. Not as often as mine or he would be screaming!
Love my truck other than brakes when it's cold!
Email me if you have any solutions. I want a schematic now!
No one has a clue anywhere as of yet
Thanks Dave

OK,
More insight now.
Went to a different dealer in Charlotte and they actually knew about the problem and had it happen a few times with dakotas and durangos.
They said it was the proportioning valve and if I replace it , it should be OK after that.
One guy at the express oil change had the same problem with a dakota and a durango.
So, when I get some extra cash I'll have that switched out.
As long as it's warm and not rainy all is good!
Must not be airtight or sealed good if cold and rainy days affect it somehow.
Dave

my problem has always been with what feels like NO rear brakes. I use my brakes well, I have replaced my fronts now 3 times in my trucks 107k miles and everytime I changed the front, I pulled the rear drums and the shoes appear to have absolutely no wear on them. In facts the drum itself even has surface rust where the shoe should meet the drum. I said somethng at the stealership last time I had it there and they said I just do not brake hard enough to cause the rears to grab.

I find that hard to believe as I drove that truck every weekday for 80 miles on I-95 for 3 years. We have some real idiot drivers here in Floida and I have had to lay into the brakes so hard that I actually locked up the fronts many times, stil the rears look unused.

If the dealer really told you that it's BS. Sounds like you need to adjust your rear brakes manually to get them working again. The automatic adjusters work when you hit the brakes in reverse; if someone is in the habbit of going from reverse to drive without braking, they won't adjust.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

that's probably also the reason you've gone through those 3 sets of pads.

I fugred they'd be the same old setup as our older vehicles, adjusts when in reverse. I back around aparking lot several times for that purpose after leaving the stealership but apparently they either have not adjusted out far enough or they will need to be manually adjusted as you suggest. I guess a trip to a mechanic is needed then.

Thanks guys
